Is this supposed to be 1/4 or 1/5 of a tank?

I've wondered that, too. I decided it's 1/5. I get about 300 miles from a tank. It takes me 60 miles to go from full to that same mark on the top - that's 1/5 of 300. It also takes me about 60 miles to from the mark yours is on to 300 - again, 1/5 of 300.

Idk but it sure goes down fast once it's past that mark for me. Seems like it anyways. I don't pay attention to how many miles I can go. So it's probly just a matter of me paying attention to the needle more when it gets that low and it APPEARS to be gowing down quicker when I actually watch it. If I don't fill up at the '1/5' mark, I end up running her to fumes. Ha.

I usually fill up right around that mark and pump in about 14 gallons. I've run it down until the little gas pump light comes on and filled it with a little over 15 gallons. Have never managed to run it lower. Tank capacity is 18.5 gallons.

Its 1/4 tank (scale is NOT linear).

From my own experience, a couple of times I've run it down to exactly on 'E'. It took 15.5 gallons to fill it.

    Based on 3 things:
    - the marks on the gauge are not evenly spaced apart (like on a ruler)
    - the gas tank is not rectangular
    - the float in the tank does not go up and down vertically (it is on the end of a horizontal rod and travels in an arc)

I've managed to get 19 gallons in mine once. Never ran out but won't be doing that again.

    Why does it matter??

The fuel gauge is there to give you an idea how much gas you might have.

1/4 of a tank that seems like it burns like 1/5 of a tank.

Of all the questions I've heard, I think this one might belong in 3rd gen.

I believe the light comes on when you have 4 gallons left, at least it was that way on my 2nd gen truck. These ones must come on with 3 gallons left. I just get my ass to a gas station as fast as I can if that light comes on, I don't want to find out what it's like to run her dry! Done that way too many times in old trucks I've had that had no working gas gauge of any kind and I had to guess how many miles it would go before running dry and hope I was right.

Is the fuel gauge blue and black or gold and white?
