    Hi All,

I have fallen into what seems to be a too-good-to-be-true scenario: I have found a 2004 double-cab Taco TRD Off-Road with 92,000 miles for $1,550. You read that right, one-thousand-five-hundred-and-fifty dollars....

For obvious reasons, I will have this vehicle THOROUGHLY inspected by a mechanic, probably multiple, before handing out any money.

I have wanted a Tacoma for a while (currently have a 2012 Jeep Patriot Latitude edition with all the bells and whistles--touch screen, upgraded speakers, sunroof, heated seats, etc.) and have heard that 2004s are beasts. So I am going to rely on all of you to give me the low-down on this car (preferably ASAP so I can make an informed decision soon).

What are the MPGs like, what are some of your stories with '04s, I am looking for a bed cap--so what are some options, what interior upgrades are possible (stereos, screens, etc.). And finally, if this car is somehow as perfect as they say it is, should I go with an older tacoma and get rid of my jeep. (Try and be as unbiased as possible with this last question.)

Thanks in advanced for the help!

Looks like you have found the holy grail. Depending on where this truck has been residing get the frame checked for rust, they tend to rust bad without proper care.
2004 was the last year of the resilient and proven 1st gens - being a DC looks like you'll get all the goodies too. Is it 4wd?

Plus look how nice you can make a DC look - there are plenty of upgrades to be made, from the interior to armor.

I of course am a bit biased I love my Taco, nothing bad about Jeeps either though. The biggest thing to make sure you get checked out throughly is the frame!! These trucks are great reliable vehicles, but are known for the frames to rust out, so make sure you get that checked out for sure, besides that, y should love that truck!

That's a smoking deal, like a lottery deal. Without knowing the particulars it stinks of scam. I'd take that over a Patriot in an instant. Good luck!

@TashcomerTexas What do you mean by DC (forgive me as I am not inept in Tacoma lingo). And yes, it is 4wd.

Double cab. Tacomas were never offered in DC till the 2001-2004 facelift.

@RogueTRD Tell me about it. Luckily I have a grace period to get it inspected before making any payments.

@DCSBFTMFW not payments in the literal sense. Just meant before paying them for the vehicle. Apologies for not being more direct.

    Thank god.

I dunno why it's so cheap. Even a salvage title would be worth more money.
But good luck. Could get interesting.

@68dave paid $500 or something for his Tacoma, but IIRC it was a bit of a project.

I used to have an F-150 King Ranch edition. Dad sold it when I went to college--this pulls at the heartstrings more than I can explain. Please tell me how you did this.

Yeah I am not getting to ahead of myself here. Like I said, seems too good to be true. Hopefully it isn't and I just happened to stumble upon the deal of a lifetime.

I am planning on redoing it. Soo if anyone wants some leather goodness be on the lookout for a for sale thread.
Where did you find it, I guess that's the real question. Was this online?

Yes, online. But from a very reputable source that would almost certainly vet for any scams.
