    It happens.
I'm an optimistic person so if you drain everything and fill it properly I'd like to believe that the truck will run as well as it always did. However that is a lot of extra oil and I don't have any personal experience with situation.

Yea, I am going to remove 2-3 more quarts, since I have already emptied 2 quarts from it.

Then I will change it complexly, from the correct spot this time..

However I just need to know if I can drive it far enough to get new oil, etc.

And the transmission question, if I can add it or not myself.

Automatic? This is not good, either way....the engine was WAY overfilled...I am afraid you may have blown some seals just by starting it up, not counting the driving....if it is an automatic tranny, you probably drained only 2.5 quarts out, so you might be able to save it with addition of the 2.5 quarts, the auto in the first gens hold 7.6 quarts of memory serves me correctly...you should have a dip stick on passenger side close to firewall, a small funnel and some Dextron III/Merc tranny fluid should be added with dipstick removed, make sure to check fluid levels with engine running on level ground for the tranny.....the fluid level should be between the two upper marks when warmed up and running....

This may not end well...bummer...you may have burned the tranny clutches that engage the gearing...

    Reserected from the dead.
You drained roughly 3 qts of transmission fluid. Add some back in thru the TRANSMISSION dipstick tube. It is small, so its gonna take a while to get the transmission fluid into the transmission. You can do it, just take your time. You will need Toyota WS transmission fluid or something similar. I use the O' Rielly's brand that is listed as compatible.

Don't worry about the extra motor oil, jsut get it out and start fresh. FWIW, I never even bother with measuring out the last half qt. With a filter change, I just put in all six qts.

Sorry about the incident, theswarm. Not certain, but I'll bet you're not the first to do this (drain the tranny instead if the engine oil). I've changed my own oil since I've been driving, and never had a vehicle that was as easy to mistake engine drain plug for tranny drain plug as my Tacomas. Good luck with it, and please post back with a damage assessment, or hopefully, a no damage report.
