    Hello,
First time posting. I picked up a 96 2.7 auto tacoma to replace my 92 pickup that i had for eleven years but was starting to rust a little too much.

The replacement tacoma has 138,000 miles on it. At the time of purchase it has a cherry bomb exhaust on it but the engine sounded fine. I removed the exhaust in favor of a stock exhaust and changed to oil to mobil synthetic.
Once I started it back up I could now hear a new noise coming from the engine. It now sounds like a diesel once warm. maybe 30 seconds to a minute after starting The noise appears to be coming from the timing chain area and goes away under acceleration. Before i rip into it (or let a shop) I was curious if anyone has an opinion on the sound.

    thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

That sounds really bad dude. Hard to tell without standing there, but its most likely a valvetrain issue, timing chain slapping, etc. Have you checked the spark plugs? It sounds like its more frequent than a loose plug, but check anyway. Guy probably put the cherry bomb exhaust on there to mask the engine noise.

The spark plugs are tight. I am leaning towards timing change slapping as well. I need to pick up a manual so i can decide what to do next.

Having a similar sounding issue with my 3.4 but not at idle. Does it make the noise when under load acceleration?

Did you ever find the solution to that noise?

no. i did not. i put in new spark plugs and it went away for the most part. two weeks ago it came back and new spark plugs did not help. If you figure it out please let me know. Truck still runs great though
