The brake pads on my 2013 with 21k miles make a loud clanking noise the first time I use the brakes after changing direction. For example, if I back out of my driveway, stop, and move forward, the first time I hit the brakes again (stop sign or whatever) there is an audible metal-on-metal clanking noise. It only happens at the first brake use, but if I have to go backwards the first time I use the brakes in that direction i get the same noise - once. I'm pretty sure that this is just the front brake pads moving within the calipers towards the "front" and "rear" of the calipers relative to rotor rotation. It's done this for about 10K miles, so i don't think it's a sign of excessive pad wear.

Is this a know problem, a symptom of something wrong, or unique to my truck?

    Is there a factory fix?

How about a specific brand of pads that don't do this?

    Thanks!

Yes it's common. You are 100% correct it's just the pads shifting up and down with the backing plate contacting the brake caliper. I think after the coating on the side of the backing plate wears away it becomes audible. I reshaped the lower spring (the only spring) to keep the pads shifted upwards since most of my braking is in the forward direction and greased the contact area on the caliper and backing plate. Mine have been silent for the last 22,000 miles.
