Help please! Heater & A/C fan stopped working.

Hope someone here can help me. Yesterday my dash fan vents suddenly didn't work anymore. The A/C and Recirc buttons still light up, but the fans don't work (at any speed setting) and when I turn the dial on the right hand side to switch from one set of vents to another, nothing happens there either. For example, I figured that even with the fan out I could at least still run the defog vent to clear my fogged up windshield. I turned the vent dial to "defog" but nothing happened, all vents seemed to stay closed.

Is there one fuse or relay that controls both of these??

Their will be a Relay and a fuse if I am not mistaken. Try placing the vent to top only (not at legs) then place temp knob on coldest setting and max blower. If it does not come on then check the fuse boxes. If the fuse is good then check the relay. To check if its working set to hi blower and switch the relay with another that is the same (a non critical relay example: such as brakes. The realys will have the same nubers) If the blower turns on then it is a bad relay, if not the blower may be bad. Make sure to place the good relay back in the original location. If its a bad relay the nearest auto parts stores should carry them.

 

I'm having exactly the same problem described above, except that mine will stop working for a half hour or so, then suddenly start working again. It will be fine for a week or two, then stop working again for a bit, then work fine again for another week or so.

Did replacing the relay take care of it for you?

 

Actually, when I opened the little hatch door and reached in to see if there were any leaves or something clogging the works, I got a big surprise when the fan blade began to spin! I wasn't hurt at all, just got a little scare.

Anyway, I then unbolted the whole assembly and removed it for inspection. I cleaned up around the outer edge of the fan blade as it looked like it had some sticky residue around there. Then I put it back together and it hasn't given me a problem since.

 

This happend to my 06 a few months ago, and My A/C tecnician gave the Blower unit a few Bangs with a Rubber Hammer and It Started working Again. What he said is that sometimes debris gets into the blower assembly and clogs it up.Once he free it and he realised everything still worked we pulled the unit and cleaned it , no probs since

 

I might try pulling mine apart this weekend. The fan assembly is located under the dash on the passenger side, right?

I'm not sure, but I think Tacomas have issues with blower motor resistors going bad.

Thank you everyone! A few months ago my AC just quit working, then a few days later it switched on again. A couple days ago the same thing happened but when I hit a bump in the road it switched back on. Well today it stopped again. It's like the switch setting didn't work at turning my blower on. I googled an checked my resistor but it looked clean and no burned outlets, so I replaced the fuse and still no AC. I then checked my ac filter and man was that a mess. Went and got filter and replaced the old but still no ac. So I googled some more which lead me here and Voila! Bellphill said their mechanic gave the blower a tap and it worked so I went outside with mallot in hand and Voila!!!! It's working!!!! I was going to try and replace the blower but now I know debris from my dirty filter probably prevented the blower from working. So a big Thank You!

 

WHAT IS THE BLOWER MOTOR FUSE # or NAME?

 

Okay guys after the recent comments I'm fairly certain I know the problem as its happened to me. The blower wire pigtail that plugs into the resistor block has a loose connection. Toyota sells the pigtail replacement. Don't remember the cost or part number.

Follow the wiring that enters the blower motor resistor block the white wire is main supplied power I'd bet it's turned brown about 1 inch to 1/2 an inch all the way to the connector. If so the pigtail needs replacing.

 

My fan also stopped working. I went to the dealer to ask what fuse controls the fan, and they told me that it was most likely a burnt out motor. They had one in stock for 170. Before buying the motor, I went home and check to see of the motor was getting voltage, which it was. I then called a local parts place, and got a new assembly for 65. Only three screws holding it in, easiest job I have ever done. After replacing it, I decided to check the old motor. When I open it up, the was lots of burnt carbon inside it. Cleaned it out, and took some sand paper to the bushings. Put it back together, and it works fine.

 

So, I've just been through this very issue. Driving around in the cold without a heater will motivate just about anyone to figure it out... and quick!

Fan stopped working, except on high. Then it stopped working altogether.

Checked the resistor. It was fine. Checked the plug that the resistor plugs into...it was a little discolored on one pin, but not very bad. Pulled the glove compartment to access the cabin air filter. It was clean.

While I had the filter out, I turned the fan on low, and nudged the fan with my finger...IT WORKED! I could then turn it on all speeds and it worked great! If I let it stop completely, though, turning it back on did nothing. The fan just sat there, stationary.

I pulled the fan motor (It's simple...there's 3 screws on the bottom of the fan housing (5.5mm or 7/16 spcket required), and it pops right down and out. Unplug, and the fan motor is free.

I took the fan apart and then the motor rear casing. Inside was FULL of copper dust and yuck from the commutator and brushes, and it was clogging up the fan and bushings, making it hard to turn. High pressure air from my compressor and it was all clean. Reassembled the whole thing, flipped the switch, and VOILA! It works!

Easy, cheap, and effective fix. The commutator and brushes are showing a lot of wear, so I'll have to replace the fan unit at some point in the near future, but I see they're less than a hundred bucks at all the auto parts stores.

On my truck the bower wiring had discolored and that was due to a loose connection. It acted just as yours did. I went to Toyota and bought a pig tail replacement (kit). All I did was cut the old pig tail off and crimped on the new pigtail then sealed it up with heat shrink. Never had a problem since.

Some people have had similar issues with the pigtail being discolored or even like you said copper dust due to lack of bushing lubrication.

What's the Part number? My does this intermittently, I have to hit it to get it working again when it happens.

 

No part number unfortunately. I replaced it years ago. Funny you say you hit it because that's exactly what I used to do. Next time jiggle the wire and see if it comes back online. If so pigtail without a doubt.
I would just go into the dealership and ask for a replacement pigtail to the A/C resistor block.

Thanks for the detailed and easy to follow instructions. Too bad I started by replacing the resistor and harness. We had 82 degrees today, so i'm just glad it is back working.
