Highly doubtful. Those who are keeping their Tdi are probably running second set of software. (I did) You see VW engine management software is pretty open (unlike Toyota) so people have upgrades chips etc.
Problem with VW is beyond Tdi. Its their Mexico factories cranking low quality garbage just like Toyota factories. (POS frame to be one example)
VW will flash software, people will re flash to whatever they want 5 minutes later.

Does VW have the cash on hand for even half of that fine? It makes the frame recall Toyota/Dana went through, and is still going through, look cheap...

It'll be interesting to see what happens. They always say the one agency you don't want to mess around with or cheat is the EPA. I guess we will find out.

You have to remember that VW is a huge corporation. They just don't sell VWs...

Just got notified my OR AC has had its build moved from 9/29 to 10/02. Pretty insignificant for me.

Nah, I'm sure he's getting his 2nd gen frame all shined up so he can trade it in for something shiny and Diesel.
Oh, I know they are huge. Huge enough that they might have 18 billion in cash to pay the fine. If they don't though the fine has to come from somewhere else, which will hurt them in the long term.

I'm not suggesting this will bankrupt VW or anything of the such, but VW/Porsche/Audi is a company with a high R&D budget that has been trimming corners as of late so a large fine could definitely cause some issues throughout the company.

Yup it is. Sorry, I only mentioned the VW off hand to point out that recalls early can be good for the consumer and the corporation. It's kind of stuck around since then.

Agreed but this a potential impact on how manufacturers are going to deal with emissions testing. Including testing that might change across the board.

Factory Order? Order placed after 9/10?

I find this very hard to believe since I put in my order on 9/14 and the projected delivery date is 2/2 with ASAP ordering status marked. There is no build date for it currently as the vehicles put on order up to 9/10 will have priority builds.

Order cut off for Sept was 9/10. The next cut off is 10/12. Anything placed from 9/11-10/12 will not have a build date scheduled until the beginning of October.

I think the EPA will slap them on the hands much like the US authorities did with the recent GMC ignition switch ruling. GMC tried to hide that they were responsible for deaths due to the faulty ignition switch (criminal offense) but because they "cooperated" with federal authorities all they had to do is pay the fine and criminal charges were dropped.

Interesting Documentary on the topic here: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/episodes/2014-2015/gm-recall-the-switch-from-hell

    New Story Here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/gm-agrees-to-pay-900m-us-to-settle-ignition-switch-probe-1.3231785

Interesting to see that in the last paragraph of the news story they state: " The deal with GM comes roughly a year and a half after Toyota agreed to a $1.2 billion penalty from the Justice Department, admitting that it hid information about defects that caused Toyota and Lexus vehicles to accelerate unexpectedly and resulted in injuries and deaths. The Justice Department said at the time that it was the largest penalty of its kind ever imposed on an auto company. GM's fine was likely less than Toyota because the company co-operated with the investigation, according to legal analysts."

All car companies try to pull off these shenanigans - it's just business. They have been pulling shit like this for years - just read Ralph Naders books. In the 60's GM actually hired prostitutes to try to hook up with Nader and to blackmail him because he was fighting against their dirty little secrets.

Don't let the marketers fool you - you're just a mouth breathing consumer with money to them. Protect yourself.

That is just a temporary VIN. It will change when the vehicle gets put into production. See my post above with Factory Order final cut off dates.
