Most criminals are lazy and stupid. If they were more intelligent they'd go into politics.

I've seen news stories where thieves abandoned a car because the couldn't drive a manual transmission.

You can be lazy and stupid and still have the ability to drive a manual tranny , it's really not that difficult

Don't forget that the manual gearbox has a lower first gear, and therefore a better overall crawl ratio than the auto trans. This is true for the 3rd gen as well. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2016-gear-ratios-at-awesome-mt-now-with-double-overdrive.387347/

The crawl control seems like a pretty neat toy to play with, even though it sounds like the dickens by pinging your brakes like a snare drum. The manual guys will have to get by with the lower crawl ratio and careful control, the way we always have.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
It seems to be a continuing ploy they are using to shove manuals out. Pretty much all dealers stock nothing but autos, the general consensus is that people will buy whatever is on the lot, even if they want a manual they will settle with an auto to get into a new vehicle right now. That's what Ford did to get rid of all their manual F-series trucks, last year you could get one was 2010. Toyota seems to be following in their footsteps. The previous 2 generation Tacomas had manuals in all but one trim which was double cab short bed trucks in 1st gens and double cab long beds in 2nd gens. Now the options are even more limited. Manufacturers seem to be doing this on purpose to save on production costs, the days of building what a small group of people want are long gone. The motto in their minds is "They'll buy what we make." It was this same way of thinking that led to the fall of General Motors in the early 80's.

You should be able to pick it up pretty quickly. I taught both of my kids to drive manuals and they are now expert. The 18 y.o. loves it and the 16 y.o. who has only been driving w/license for 4 months is quite good - she learned on a Subaru Outback XT (Turbo) w/a shitty worn out clutch - I swear the thing is straight out of a Sherman tank - I like manuals but hate that one. In any case, she does just fine. All that being said, and keep in mind I pretty much had manuals until a few years ago, I prefer my DD in city traffic to be an automatic. Also, the first time you have traction control do its thing and keep you from getting all over the place on sheer ice you shake your head and thank the technology wizard that cooked it up.

@Adam - I had an '87 Toyota truck - manual transmission, manual 4x4 shift, and manual hubs. There was one intersection in Baltimore that I used to go through that would get all slicked up with oil and in the rain it was impossible to restart w/o getting into 4x4. I'd hop out at red lights and run around and lock the hubs, people would be looking at me like I was crazy. Had a cop pull me over once - wanted to know what I was doing. New tires helped but only so much - I would feather that clutch and it just didn't matter. Eventually found a way to do it by applying just a little bit of parking brake and using 2nd gear just so .... - home made hill start assist - I was inspired by my friends Subaru which IIRC had a manually engaged hill start assist. But still - I am good with a clutch and that hill would get the best of me. I used to be able to jump my parents '78 Ford Econoline 4 spd with my eyes closed and had a '68 Wagoneer 3 on the tree.

yeah ... technology isn't all bad and automatics have come a looooooong way

Still waiting for first hand experience with a stick and checking this thread all the time

so to waste some time waiting for a new stick owner to share some info, here are some mundane points - all obviously my own opinion

    1) Many people drive sticks in horrible traffic with no problem. I basically work for a large trucking company and currently all of the well over 100 trucks we put on the road every day are sticks. Big Macks, KWs ect all with heavy clutches. We delivery into NYC, Phili, Baltimore ect. and no one complains about driving a stick. And my guys complain about just about everything. Even owner operators who buy their own truck and work for us don't buy automatics. If these guys can drive 80,000lbs thru NYC rush hours traffic with a stick I think a Tacoma in the same conditions would be a lot easier.

    2) Most people buy "enthusiast" vehicles because they like to drive them. Every thing that a vehicle does for you takes some of that experience from you. One day in the not to distant future Google and others will start selling cars that drive themselves. Them maybe automatic drivers will complain that a Tacoma driven be a computer isn't really driving, or maybe they will just sit back and talk about how great their self driving Taco is. Good for them either way. But as long as I can get a "good" stick I will drive my own vehicle and have fun doing it.

    3) Teach your kids to drive a stick. Its truly a great thing to do with your kids, then let them decide what they want. I taught both my son and daughter to drive a stick. My son drives a stick now and hates automatics and my daughter can drive a stick but prefers automatics. It was great teaching them an they made their own choices.

    4) Putting a "good" stick in a vehicle takes effort. I was not happy with the 05 Tacoma I had with a stick but the previous generation that I owned was very good. It takes skill and effort to get it right. I just hope Toyota put the required effort into the new Tacoma's stick.

    5) Dealers don't stock sticks because they are lazy, un-informed and exist to only make money they. If they were honest about that I wouldn't have a problem. But they spout that "we care about our customers" stuff. How many times have you spoken to a salesman that knows less about the vehicle you are buying than you do ? Granted I have only spoken directly to dealer from 100 miles or so from my area but its amazing what they will tell you. I had to drive 40 miles past many other dealers to buy Tacoma the didn't exist according to local dealers.

    6) With all other things the same a stick will get the same or better real world MPG. The EPA test is heavily biased to an automatic because it can be programmed just for that test. After what I read here about the Tacoma's gearing all other things are not the same. Gearing is real issue with MPG, performance and engine wear the choices made by Toyota will effect all of those things.

    Enough of that

Still waiting to hear about actual stick owner, or at least a test drive

Nope. No JBL, either. Beancounters are trying hard to make manual less attractive so it can be eliminated.

    Prepare to bend over. $$$$.

But there are some benefits: universal health care, statutory vacations and manual transmissions!

I'm actually happy to hear that. I had one on my 2014 Corolla and I couldn't stand it. That's the only one out of the list of options you can't get with the manual that doesn't piss me off! No DCLB, no AC TRD Off Road, etc. The main reason I really want another Tacoma is the availability of a V6 manual, but they're not making it easy for me. I plan on trading in my 2015 Canyon next year for an Access Cab TRD Sport 6spd in either white or sand, as long as the gas mileage reports are positive. The Canyon gets me 25 highway all day long, but I don't trust the thing past 30,000 miles since its GM.

drove a white double cab OR manual today at Toyota of Danville (Illinois). Im looking for a sport auto, but it was the first 16 Id seen in person, so drove it anyway. For reference, I currently drive a 15 Accord Sport manual. Not overly impressed with the shift action, clutch take up, LONG throws ( I know its a truck right) - makes it hard to drive smoothly. Of course, you have to get used to the nuances of any MT, but it's not something Id want to deal with. Hoping to find an auto for comparison at least. Overall the truck was nice inside, more room in back than I anticipated. Liked the buttons, interface, new screen. Did not love the disconnected ride - kinda bouncy. Truck was quiet enough, but not as quiet as I was expecting after reading these forums for last few weeks. Seems like many are looking for this particular vehicle. This one had only tow package, no technology, etc. MSRP 33 something.

    1. Agree it acn be done, sometimes I just don't wanna! waaaaah. [edit - I learned on a '78 Ford Econoline with a 4sp - that thing had a monster throw! I swear it moved like 3 feet between 1 and 2. My '99 Silverado 1500 had a 5 speed and that was a beast of a throw but the clutch .. silk.]
    2. OK
    3. YES! My X and I mandated proficiency BEFORE we would let them get their license. Travel the rest of the world ... you damn well better know how. And I am not a survivalist or anything near that but my kids will damn well know how to drive a stick and get the hell out of some shitty situation where the only vehicle available is a stick shift with a crappy clutch. Now that they have the skills they actually get it and understand the value. As previously posted one likes manual transmission, the other ... indifferent at this point - her DD is a crappy manual with a f'ng Sherman tank clutch and the rest are split. I have a Miata 5sp which she thinks is a hoot and will have the Taco. her Moms other car is a Fiat 500 ... no comment.
    4. Agree!
    5. Meh. Profit has always been better on auto ... thats not lazy, its smart.
    6. Not sure anymore, these new auto's are pretty good at eeeking out MPG's.
