I have been trying to find information on the 2016 four cylinder engine as i have suspicion that Toyota has upgraded the engine. The biggest clue is the Toyota product information press pdf for the 2016 model Tacoma lists the Compression ratio of the 2.7l as 10.2 whereas the 2015 document lists the compression ratio as 9.6 The horsepower and torque remain unchanged at 159 hp and 180 ft-lbs @ 3800 rpm. Hmmmm. Another poster in another thread was convinced the 2016 engine was DUAL vvti and 10.2 compression. The only information I could find to back this up was in Wiki and it said that the 2tr-fe engine recieved an upgrade in 2015 to dual vvti, but it did not state if this was for the U.S. market. Sooo. I was at the Toyota dealer with the intent of ordering an AC 4x4. They popped my bubble by telling me that you can only get the utility package (rear seat delete) in white. The other options I wanted was the black alloy wheels and convienance package (key FOB and cruise control). They said "Can do." but they also came back with another option. The truck I wanted minus the wheels was at the distrubution center in Houston and they thought they could snag it. I bit. But here is the juicy detail, the options/cost breakdown for the truck had "159 hp DUAL vvti" I probably should not put quotes around that as there was more but it most certainly said DUAL vvti. I almost did a dance. Is toyota understating the horsepower and torque of this engine so as not to steal sales of the new V6? By the way I did run across one reference that listed the torque of the 2016 Tacoma 2.7l as 189 ft. lb. at 4200 rpm. So, piecing it all together, could it be that we have a 10.2 compression ratio dual vvti with 189ft. lb at 4200. If so max horsepower could be?

I can't read this wall of text. Paragraphs go a long way.

I doubt they would understate the hp and torque numbers of the engine. However, those numbers are only peak hp and torque. The hp and torque curves could change giving increased power without the peak hp and torque changing. If that is the case, it would not be the first time I've seen an engine upgrade not result in increased peak hp and torque, but still improve the driving experience.

I understand your point, but the compression ratio alone should boost power across the curve.

I've posted extensively previously about what the updates to the engine for 2016 were, but basically, higher compression and Dual VVT-i. Should result in a better powerband and torque curve.

Thanks Jeff. I guess I only saw the one thread. Should be a nice engine. Do you believe the peak horsepower and torque is indeed unchanged?

They also said the truck was "all new". We know how that worked out.

The previous reports on the four cylinder were all excellent and I don't feel it is totally attributed to the six speed. The motor is probably capable of 309 hp which occurs just 200 rpm beyond where the computer governs it....and we will never know that this engine is an animal. But the truth will come out when this exact engine appears in the new rwd Supra due out 2020.

That's a mistake..The 2.7L fanboys all told me this IS the engine that will be sold throughout the line including a turbo version in the tundra rated at 500 hp. There is nothing this motor can't do.

If the 2.7L and 5spd was available in a smaller lighter truck I would be all over it.

I would like to see the FJ resurrected under the Scion name on the standard cab wheel base they stopped making in 2014.

...the short truck in 4 wd wasn't selling enough But, a short SUV.....????
I want the 2.7L with the six speed auto and basic 4 wd with ATrac only.keep it simple, keep it cheap. Like this only with an SUV body...of course the frame would have to be stiffened in the back....might make it cost prohibitive in this day and age.
