Second Gear

99 2WD, 2.4L 4-Cyl
120,000 miles
manual transmission

Recently got my transmission fluid changed (at the dealer) and ever since, it has become very difficult to put the truck into second gear; especially when the truck is cold. Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure it isn't relevant, but they changed the rear diff fluid the same day as well.

Rear diff isn't going to have anything to do with the tranny shift problem...

 

Is this the only oil change it has had in it's lifetime?

 

I'm not sure. I've only had the truck myself for about 2 years. Don't have any service records.

 

I have read that sometimes if you have a first oil change on a transmission after many miles (125-150 range and higher), that it could knock some of the old build up off and wedge itself. As far as that being true I don't know, but it could explain what is happening with your transmission. I think the article I read was more for automatic transmissions though.

But it is just a guess and a suggestion to what could be happening, I would suggest checking the level, and calling the place to see what they say about it. You may want to try to put some more miles on the truck and it may go away.

I would like to see some more guys chime in and see what they have to say too.

I thought that maybe the transmission has to get "worked in" with the new lube and hoped it would go away. It's been three weeks (700 miles). I called the shop and they said that it maybe a bad bushing but that doesn't sound right to me considering that it was working fine before they changed the fluid.

 

Ah man I'm sorry to hear about that, I'm not a transmission expert and I'm all out of ideas. Hopefully someone else can chime in on this. And your right, a "bad bushing" doesn't sound right to me either, I hope everything works out for you.
