OP. Do this. You shouldn't have a problem getting a copy of the police report, right? :D

You'll make your insurance agent so happy, they may be able to get you a copy of the LEOs dash cam footage if they use those there. Something fun for your archives.

Your bumper looks bent. Time for a color-matched. j/k. Good luck with the repair(s).

Black Taci is correct, government/municipal vehicles are self insured, just like all the township DPW trucks.

Last winter we had just gotten back from a holiday and got in very late the night before. In the morning my wife went to go grab us a couple of Timmies (Canadian Coffee Franchise) and I guess on her way back she had a little fender bender on our street with a cop who also happens to be one of my neighbors.

Luckily the truck had just a tiny scuff on the front bumper that rubbed right off, her van had a dent in it though. The neighbor admitted fault on the spot though and dropped by later in her squad car and offered to pay out of pocket for any damage. There was none so it was all good but perhaps between that and being my neighbor I may have one free pass if she were to ever pull me over lol.

I'm thinking maybe this poster got rear ended by an officer, they told him that and the poster took it w/o question.

    Maybe?

I'm uncertain of their liability while responding to call and under a code, that's an interesting question.
However, in my case, he was simply on his way to work, hadn't even started his shift yet. We weren't even inside of the city limits.

One can never have too many light bars.
Cop cars have insurance it's just not the same as the standard Geico or AAA policy that normal cars have. Because Police cars take such a beating and are intentionally put in harms way no for profit company would ever insure them. The risk is just too high. But the municipalities are self insured and they are the ones that would pay out an auto claim. Either the state, county or municipality will pay out the claim with taxpayer money. This would be the same if a fire truck or any other government vehicle hit you.

I can some what attest to this. I was merging onto a highway after coming off the interstate and I see a cop a few hundred yards in front of me coming up an exit lane in the wrong direction. He proceeds to cut across the highway I'm on whilst still going the wrong direction. There wasn't too much traffic so it wasn't chaos but needless to say I braked and someone rear ended me. I can't say for certain but I'm about 99.9% sure the cop did not claim responsibility. He showed up at our wreck some 30 minutes later but was told to leave by the other cops.

Self insured eh? Seems like different organizations have different practices. My buddies Dodge was not only totaled - but they offered to ticket him for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle (with no lights and siren?). When he later tried a court action, with a witness - the city attorney was granted (by a municiple judge) many delays and continuances until my friend couldn't stay with it. Welcome to south central USA.

I wonder if he was texting? Or playing on his cop computer. He could have been making a post on TW.

I once got rear-ended by a state police officer. I was stopped in a 4 lane road lookingto take a life and he wasn't paying attention and absolutely creamed me from behind. I was driving a POS 2002 Taurus which was obviously totalled, but when I saw him come at me at the very last second I stiffened up and when he hit me, my shoulder got all sorts of messed up from the impact. He admitted to playing with his computer and admitted fault on the spotand got the ticket from the town police (which he knew those officers). Two surgeries and five years later we settled out of court for $150k. It really sucks and ruined my beer league hockey career as I am goalie and it was my glove hand that got ruined. I wish it had never happened, I am in pain all of the time still and it hurts to workout.

Just be happy you are ok. Maybe push the insurance provider to pay for any loss in value your truck has now that it has been in an accident.

    OK,

It seems your buddy should have gotten a better lawyer or maybe we don't have all of the facts...

Also that doesn't mean that they don't have insurance or are not self insured...

He hit his lights with a quickness! I really don't think his neck was even done snapping back into place from the impact before I saw his lights come on.
