In the context of say 10,000 years, isn't this just a continuation of the cycle?

    Not exactly..

For most if not all of the Holocene epoch (approx 11-12thousand years) the Earth has been in an interglacial period.

Climatic optimum, which is about the point where sea levels are at their highest, for the current interglacial was reached between 2.5 to 5 thousand years ago. Our sea levels are rising very

quickly at present, a fact that is seen in the scientific community as quite concerning. As Earth's tilt on its axis continues to decrease, we should experience milder climate. This would mean a

global average of cooler summers and warmer winters. With the data we have now, it would appear that the opposite is happening.

Here is a graph showing the change in global temperature vs. the change in solar activity:

This change does not seem to fit into any perceivable cycle.

If I follow correctly, the cycle hasn't ended. At least if you agree with the definition of the Holcene Period.
And if the ice hasn't stopped melting, it only stands to reason sea level will continue to rise.

Ok, but I'll point out right off the bat that I am not an expert. The information I provide is up for debate, as there is not a full understanding of all the forces at work with regard to systems that take place over hundreds of thousands and even millions of years. There is lots of data from the past hundred years, and we can look back almost a million years with ice cores, but axial tilt's effects on climate and the finer details of glacials and interglacials are not fully understood.

That said, I'll tell you what I meant about your post:

As you stated, the cycle is not at an end. It is continuous, interglacials are preceded and succeeded by glacials and vice versa.

The sentence including the phrase: "..definition of the Holocene Period," is one that I'd like to touch on briefly, just for sake of not letting things get confusing. The Holocene is an epoch, not a period. BUT, sometimes (mostly outside of the geological community) glacials and interglacials are referred to as glacial periods and interglacial periods. So, because the current interglacial is referred to as the Holocene interglacial, use of the name Holocene Period isn't necessarily wrong. This may sound inane or pedantic, but I thought it was worth pointing out as the Quaternary Period might come up in the conversation and it is important to know that the Holocene is the most recent Epoch in the Quaternary Period and it happens to be an interglacial. lol

Now, as for the ice continuing to melt and the sea level continuing to rise, yes and no. It is thought that the climatic optimum for the Holocene may have occurred 5-8 thousand years ago. The climatic optimum is the point in an interglacial where the climate is at its most temperate and weather extremes are at their lowest. The highest sea levels of an interglacial tend to occur right around the climatic optimum. Not exactly the same time, but very close to it. Our most recent climatic optimum came and went, so presumably the highest sea level that would occur during the Holocene should also be behind us. However, sea levels are continuing to rise at a rate which in recent years has been accelerating.

Perhaps the climatic optimum for the Holocene has not yet been reached and what we thought to be the warmest part of the supposed mid-Holocene was actually a fluctuation that will look trivial once we actually reach the climatic optimum. This doesn't seem particularly likely though, as the last glacial was a long one and longer glacials tend to be bordered by shorter interglacials.

Well, that's all I have time for before I head to work. In case you couldn't tell, I love to nerd out on this shit so please feel free to question anything that I said and to bring new info to the table. I've got a cursory understanding of this stuff but have only scratched the surface and am hungry to know more. If you really want to get balls deep into this topic please do, and share with us what you find. When I get some time I'll post a few sources if you are interested in reading up on it.:goingcrazy:

I still don't get it but props for trying to explain.

I'd like to see a mock up of what the earth would look like if it all melted.

Just googled it. Looks like philly becomes the new AC and we don't have to feed the mouse in Florida any more Money because Orlando goes the way of Atlantis.

I can live with that.

I think you will be just fine Larry... unless there is a large storm. If you should need higher ground you can always park at my house. Over 150 feet above sea level ... No water wings required
