EPA destroys the Animas River, then fines GM almost a billion dollars for killing people, and then goes after VW for 18 billion and nobody was directly injured. Bias and deflection- trying to cover up their own incompetence and be the "good guys".

The EPA didn't have anything to do with GM . Think about it. Why would the Environmental Protection Agency care about unsafe vehicles. That isn't there wheelhouse.

The EPA did destroy the Animas River though it could also be argued that having a tailings pond in that location in the first place was a bad idea waiting to go worse. Just because they mess up doesn't mean they should stop doing their jobs. I bet it's going to come out that this was only discovered because of a whistle blower from VW themselves. Someone had a conscious or a bone to pick and clued the EPA in onto this.

EDIT: Man are you that into Diesel engines that you think the EPA is covering up a folly that happened months ago, that the media literally stopped caring about months ago, with a legit fine against a company that intentionally tried to circumvent environmental regulations that everyone else has been playing ball with. They have to set an example here to deter other companies from trying to do the same thing. Diesel isn't the reason they are doing it.

Nope, not a cover-up, just deflecting the public eye. NHTSA, EPA, NRC and other Fed branches are too chicken shite to go after real pollution and safety concerns, instead aim for $37,000 per-car fines to line their coffers. It's not a conspiracy, just abuse of power. When somebody can prove a direct correlation between elevated NOx in a single Tdi and the death of one person, I will retract my stand, otherwise they are just going after low-hanging fruit.

Um, NOx is the leading ingredient of car smog. Smog kills dozens of people every year directly by inducing various breathing issues and cripples thousands. If you don't believe that I recommend a healthy dose of Google coupled with some reality.

Just because cars aren't the only polluter doesn't mean it's okay for VW to willingly circumvent the rules

I understand the NOx issue, and it was one of the thing I considered when I started buying TDi's back in the early 2000's- only a fool would believe that any exhaust is safe to breathe. This is selective enforcement by the Feds, and I can't see how GM with faulty ignition switches, Tanaka with faulty airbags, FCA with dangerous gas tank placements and our holier than thou Toyota with unintended acceleration issues aren't worthy of crushing fines as well.

    ^This

Again, he is comparing safety recalls to a gross violation of Federal Environmental Law. They are not enforced the same way or by the same people.

Yes, I get that. I was alluding to the EPA as yet another Fed branch, and as such they should be playing by similar ethics. What we have here amounts to an acknowledgment that human lives lost in an accident with direct causality to the faulty part in question are less valuable than polluted air. I'm pissed that the value of my cars has plummeted, and that the fix may further devalue their usefulness and reliability, but I still think that the amount of the fines is clearly excessive. Maybe that is the amount the EPA will need to fix their F-up in the Animas River.

The 2016 Nissan Titan is getting a Cummins turbo diesel. Too bad it doesn't look like the Titan anymore, more like a Ford now.

I'd be afraid to own a diesel vw in CA when it comes to emission testing. For example if they make the car tune run 100% clean like how it is for testing. I'm sure people will need to have the dealer tune the car or hopefully have a buy back program. I wouldn't want my car detuned to have less power, run worse, and get worse mileage then when I bought it new

Just FYI a criminal investigation was launched by the Justice Department today into the VW scandal, so on that level they are treating it the same as the other issues.

The EPA fines will be totally separate and pertain strictly to violating clear laws and punished with clear penalties. This is no different than a person getting a speeding ticket. You know the fine before you speed, VW knew what the possible punishment was because it's right in the law.

Yep, I saw that. They also expanded the possible fraud to 11 million VW's, obviously most being gassers. If you are in the market for the long haul, VW stock will be really cheap soon and will probably pay off in 20 years.

I was thinking about that this morning. I'd wait until the fine is announced. I would think that will be the worst day for VW.

Does anyone think they'll get people to bring their cars in if recalled? If I owned a VW diesel right now, I'd never go anywhere near a dealership from now on.

No, but if a class action lawsuit to force a buy back comes to pass I see a ton of people taking that option.

Then again, in emissions testing states, people might not have a choice other than to reflash.

It is VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group), and actually 9 Billion in fines. The CEO's contract is up on Friday. I wonder if it will be renewed?

It's also sounding like the EPA will settle for a 9 billion dollar fine . For the people who thought that they were going to trim this to a few percent it sounds like things aren't going that way.

Does Germany have a treaty on extradition with the USA? If yes, than that CEO might want to move to France considering the Justice Department is likely going to press charges against individuals in the company as well as the company itself. What a mess.
