For the past 2 years I've had an OME 3" lift kit... ever since installation the front has always come down hard on speed bumps and potholes, I just thought it was a stiff suspension. Now, 2 years later, I'm starting to think my front coilovers were built with improperly charged struts. Does anyone know a way to check this without removing the coilovers and completely disassembling them??

I'm in the market for a lift and everyone seems to immediately point to OME. But, I keep reading these complains about them that's making think I should just pay the extra money for Fox's.

Sorry I can't help. Even if you did take them off, how would you know if they were properly charged?

If you can push/pull on them and they give resistance in the opposite direction then they still have charge. I went with OME because everyone points to them, but if you search for "OME clunk" or "OME front issues" there are dozens of people that complain about something being wrong. I'm going to use them through the winter and get myself a nice FOX setup in the spring... lesson learned.

I'm going to put some play dough on my bump stops and hit a few speedbumps at 5mph (the suspension starts getting crappy at this speed) and then see if the dough got flattened out or not. If it did then the OMEs are definitely shot.... if the dough is in tact, then I need to find a new test.

What setup are looking to get? I'm thinking the Fox 2.5's in the front, not sure on springs. I want the All Pro Expedition leafs in the back. Everyone seems to recommend the Dakars but then complains about them clunking also. Don't know what shock to put in the rear. Opinions?

FOX 2.5 or possibly one of the ICON setups, I'll decide in the spring because I don't want to buy a brand new suspension right before the weather starts getting crappy (and Baltimore starts throwing salt everywhere for the winter). I have the TSB leaf + Toytec Leaf in the back and it does fine, the first few months were squeaky but some WD40 and time fixed that. I have the nitrochargers in the rear as well, I need to check them and see how they have held up.

    Where in Baltimore are you?

I'm looking at ICON or ToyTec for my lift this go around I've thought about fox too. I'm lost when it comes to the rear though and I want a 3" lift up front and able to rock a plate bumper from Pelfreybuilt

I can assure you the 885X springs are not enough, they barely handle my DBSB with a pelfrey skid. You will need the 886X (which is the strength of the 887X, but 7mm longer). I plan on swapping out the suspension and the bumper in the spring, so you and I are going to be looking at very similar setups... hell I might just mimic a suspension setup on the forums.

Whatever I get for the rear, I'm going to dissasemble the leafs and paint them and install some gasket pads to reduce squeak. Honestly the nitrochargers were OK, but I'm going with Billies in the rear next time.

From what i have gathered, its not an issue with the struts being built improperly, its a valving issue. they way the have the valving set, its the rebound side is way to harsh for the springs, and as a result it comes down way to fast and creates the clunk you hear when everything jerks to a stop. that is what i think is happening

Well Damn guess I'll be looking at my same setup I had on the 12, Billies all the way around with OME 886 up front and I ended up doing a 2" AAL

Matt, that might be the most fact driven theory I've read for this issue. I was starting to get tired of people telling me it was the sway bar... even after I told them I did the sway bar delete mod.

Chip, did that prior setup get you a full 3" lift in the front? Did it go over bumps, limbs, rocks, potholes well?

I came up with it seeing as the clunk occurs with or without a swabar/ relocate kit, and mostly occurred with the heavier spring rates, as well as on trucks that had a lot of weight in the rear, causing both front and rear clunk. what id love to do is re-valve a set of rebuildable coilovers to the OME settings, set springs identical in length and rating to the OME ones, and see if the clunk is still there... sadly im far too poor to test that idea, and most people with rebuildable coilovers dont have a truck similar to ones that most OME kits go on.

Tim, if you're worried about Baltimore salt and corrosion issues, and you decide to go with a fox setup, clear coat them before they even touch the truck. fox makes a real nice shocks, but of the other comparable options, fox tends to corrode/rust much faster.
