Hi, I own a 2009 manual trans Tacoma and haven't replaced the throw out bearing :fingerscrossed:

But I do have a buddy who had a 2007 manual trans FJ who did have to do that

Good to know. I have seen more manual problems myself, probably because I look for manuals and don't really care about the auto.. everyone I know with an Auto has had zero issues. As far as 2nd Taco.

    I did not know that.

Most of the people I know with manuals I know through offroad clubs. Perhaps those conditions are a little harsher on the transmission and it shows in wear. Also, the throw out bearing doesn't seem to catastrophically fail. Instead it just gets harder to get the clutch to disengage properly when shifting, so I think some of the minor failures go unnoticed until they become unbearable.

I am convinced the manual is the weaker option, in 2nd gen tacoma.

That does not keep me from owing one.

Hey, I go wheeling too! Still, I've pretty much accepted the inevitability that I may need to replace the throwout bearing and upgrade the clutch at some point in the future and have just been lucky up to this point.

Yeah, I was just saying in general. I'm sure there are plenty of stock throwout bearings out there in trucks older than 3 years but, with the people I talk to, it's been an issue on their ~09-10 trucks.

Nothing wrong with rowing gears. I've owned a few manual cars and if I were to get a performance coupe again I'd likely go stick. It's one thing to argue that the manual is a personal preference, which it is, and another to argue that it's better because someone personally prefers it.

I went with automatic myself mainly due to ease of resale. It's getting harder around here to find people, who aren't dead set manual Tacoma fans, who want the stick shift second hand. I mean, any idiot can operate an automatic. So any idiot can buy and use an automatic without learning anything they didn't learn on the go cart track. On my last vehicle I had to accept the trade in because, even though it was favorably priced, the people who contacted me wanted the automatic version.

Makes sense. Glad its not just me..

Unfortunately I am going to take it to Toyota, I am under 10k and I had it looked at at 8k.. They will hopefully cover it under warranty, and I will baby it until I can afford the 750 plus for the better clutch.

The budget is very tight right now..

I imagine they will say its my fault by default, and tell me I need to pay for it. But I will not authorize any work that I have to pay for, I would do it myself. But I have some hope, even if I beat the shit out of it 8k is completely ridiculous for a new trucks clutch.

I was considering the URD 3+ clutch. I tow a lot, and I like to have fun. Heavy clutch doesn't bother me.. I dont like the other option that has different compounds on the 2 sides of the disk.

Has anyone had a clutch replaced under warranty?

And has anyone else upgraded to aftermarket, any suggestions?

I can tell you for sure offroad is harsher on them. My 2008 had 2 throwout bearing catistrophic failures. And one squeal that I replaced. Its a shitty bearing, and dirt and mud make it cry.

However many many of them are not put through the harsh life of that truck, yet still fail.

And my old w56 trans trucks have lived the same life for years and years. I have never had a throw out bearing fail except in a 2nd gen tacoma.

Just for the record I like both transmissions. Reason I have a auto is to have a safer remote start I installed and better for resale.

Overall probably. Everything is a little sensitive around here.

I am not but it makes for good conversations haha.

My OEM manual held 550 wheel torque on 28" tires, and 450 on 35" tires. I barely did any drag racing, as that shock load is what damages the components the most. I still did a little though. Unsuccessfully. Lol.

However, the aluminum sleeve for the pilot bearing to slide on would wear out. URD stocks a steel adapter kit now.

The side pivot of the tob arm could have been better applied or dropped all together for a center push style.

Syncros did wear out and shifting became a complicated chore. Having to shift to 3rd gear before then being able to down shift to any gear. 6th to 5th, etc....

Granted, that power lasted pretty long before any problems, especially compared to the non heavy duty AY6 in the XR. I lable it a such because the Aisin site (when I read it years ago) labled the 4x4 AY6 as "heavy duty."

    The resale is real..

I took that hit on my 2013 too :/

Payed more buying it new because it was harder to get. And got payed less trading it because it was harder to sell.

That 2015 though. No wiggle room, pretty much bent over an took it like a champ. But I love the truck, and I will likely never resale it.

    Thats great!

I don't have much evidence, but I would suspect its very similar in strength the the r series trans. Too bad it doesn't shift quite as nice. Not that its bad.

Other than the throwout bearing my only real complaint is the reverse gear ratio.. it sucks..

I know these clutches only for our trucks. Friends have had great success with the centerforce clutches. I and A LOT of others have had terrible misfortune with the Competition Clutch brand, On the Tacoma.

I have had great success with the SPEC Stage 3+ clutch. Handled more wheel torque than its rated engine torque, without the slightest slippage. That's truely impressive. Took a long time to stop chattering though. "Break in."

SPEC Clutch Stage 2+ acts just as smoothly as OEM, on first test drive, while holding much more torque. Installed one and did the test drive, as well as follow up. Great clutch.

A lot of members have not complained about the new line of URD clutches. Only that they feel great. I have no specific knowledge of anyone complaining about URD made clutches. Except for a few minor installer issues with the twin disk.

Only thing I can really say, is that if the OEM disk has plastic isolators between the spring and the hub, better not install another OEM. The pressure plate is also fairly weak and doesn't hold well against both additional power/stress/weight.

At least the hubs aren't shearing off of the disks these days. Just exploding due to plastic isolators breaking and the springs flying out and making bits of everything.

The only real and good manual which Toyota makes for the 1gr, isn't sold in the States. Unless it is on the 2TR ? Perhaps.

It the the 5 speed sold in foreign markets.
