Effing Goat heads

Pulled behind my building to drop the trailer, came out with hundreds of these miniature tire spikes. No flat yet, but some of them suckers are rather long and inbetwixt the tread, causing me to worry. Once I hit the pavement, most broke off and left their thorny arms in the rubber. I'm more worried about the trailer tires, as they are 16" with minimal tread, and I'm taking a 3 hour drive thru the canyon tomorrow to go camping.

I hated those things when I lived in AZ too. In shoes, slippers, dogs paws, bike tires, someone tracks one in the house and your heel finds it...

 

What in the world are those?

 

Worst thing is when I mountain bike. My tires are tubeless cross country so if I hit any of those there's a good chance of a puncture. I would say don't pull them out until you get back and hopefully you will get lucky.

 

Looks like a plant defense from hell. At this point what are your options OP? I'd try getting home on those tires if none have lost any PSI yet.

 

Sometimes it seems silly until it happens. I have not seen these things so who knows what they can go through. A cheap trailer tire might not be able to take it especially if it has almost no tread left.

I've seen dried sunflower stalks go through combine tires and truck radiators before. Plants are SOB's when they dry down.

 

My neighbor and I have been dealing with low or flat tires on our riding lawn mowers thanks to these for a few years. They are a pain!

 

I have never heard of anyone getting a flat in a vehicle tire from them. Bicycle tires, yes. I put that green slime stuff in all my bike tires and it stops goathead leaks pretty well. I don't see why you couldn't get a few bottles for your trailer tires and see what happens...

 

This. These are pretty common around here, definitely not going to puncture a truck tire.

 

OP: I'd just keep on eye on it. I know someone that had his truck tire punctured by a black locust thorn - It broke off and He couldn't get a good grip to pull it. Ended up rotating that tire around his truck for 3 years for before he replaced the tires

 

I wouldn't worry about them. I f'ing hate those things and I'm glad I don't have them where I live. Instead we have Cholla cactus, and that shit is still in my tires, but no punctures!

 

Get tire liner for bikes and could work for those mower tires too.

 

Yep, it'd have to be goatheads from hell at least 1.5" long to any damage i suspect.... oh..hi Ryry

 

I think there is a bug that you can introduce into the area that keeps those plants in check....

Some /s (sarcasm) was intended. I hate these little buggers, but am hoping they won't phase me. Losing a trailer tire at 60 mph on a windy road of course bothers me, slightly.

Yes. That's them, the needles are reverse barbed like fish hook. Once in, they have to be ripped out. They are in my tires, and backpacking boots.

Mother nature is amazing in her ability to create some wicked plant life!!!

I have to say your OP brought back some memories of when I was a kid and used to play along the Colorado River. Man those were good times! Those goad heads were between our campsite and the river. I stepped on a few! Neverforgetem!

 

I thought this was a silly post until I read it and did my own research. Those little bastards are nature's own caltrops.

I'd still give my left nut to live somewhere dry like West Texas or Arizona, even with those little boogers.

 

Ahh yes the effing goat head. I do not miss those from NM. Walked bare foot in the grass (weeds) once, spent the next week hopping from digging the main barb out of my heal. The suck, but won't hurt a truck or trailer tire. Bike tire, yes.
