I have no real need for 4WD. My FWD Matrix has served me well for most of my needs, and I've only been stuck in the snow/mud twice since I bought it in 2006, both times in dirt driveways that were dry when I parked in them. Not worth the extra upfront cost or higher insurance premium for something I'd rarely use.

You're supposed to drive in 4WD mode for 10 miles every month to keep the transfer case lubricated, and I honestly don't know how I'd do that since I drive on paved roads 99.9% of the time. I'd rather have the extra payload and towing for my music equipment than an expensive function that could end up failing on me when I need it due to lack of use.

I was dead set on a 2WD Sport until someone posted the OR in Inferno. I could do without the hood scoop if it meant I had a little more functionality in a jam for around the same price. Seeing that the MTS and CC are only in the 4WD for an extra $3k plus another $20-30 per month in insurance, it looks like I'm back to the Sport.

I had to get my truck helicoptered out of Colorado b/c it's only 2wd and couldn't handle the mountains.

Driving an unpaved road is technically off-road ?
Tell me you're pulling my leg...;-)
The Al Can highway for years was an unpaved highway.
I live on an unpaved road and and it has a name...the (blank) Camp road...and it's unpaved. In our neck of the woods, anything designated a road is traverseable by a 2 wd sedan, paved or not. Our state and local govt. must be screwed up too...they maintain unpaved roads....our house insurance would not be inforced if it weren't a road.....l

A "road" has a prepared surface, paved or not...a trail does not..and that is what the Baja is...a trail. Off road is going over "unprepared surfaces" you can encounter ANYTHING and soft terrain is standard fair for an off road vehicle to encounter. That's why off road vehicles have tread tires..big wide ones for flotation......

I guess my point is simply this.....roads are made of prepared surfaces, trails are not...roads are by definition, suppose to passable by common vehicles, trails are not. So we can't just put roads and trails in the same catagory as a marked road.
Off road vehicles are made to travel "unprepared " surfaces which include trails which are just worn ways. Off road trucks ALWAYS have set ups for soft surfaces. They have deep tread tires for traction over soft surfaces and wider tires for floatation and in two wheel drive they plow on soft surfaces.
So, it's merchandizing setting up any two wheel drive vehicle with AT tires in sizes made for floatation. So these vehicles are a contradiction.

Even the Baja Buggies in 2 wd have cookie cutter front tires and are not made for extended soft surfaces they can't travers with momentum. So, a true off road 2 wd vehicle should be made with very small front tires to decrease drag....like two wheel drive tractors are.....and they aren't..so they aren't even a true off road even in two wheel drive.

Had several 2 wd Toyota and Mazda Pick ups. I really liked them especially the economy and lower stance for easier loading. Weight in the back, studded snows and they were excellent on road snow drivers. But when the snow got deep, you got stuck. when I lived in town and just travels paved roads 99% of the time, and you are careful when you go off pavement. There is little need for anything else.

The 4 wd system is not a driver's system. Unlike car based AWD, it does not enhance handling, it is detrimental to it. So, you only use it as a "get out of jail free card". With that in mind, it is still reasonable to have it and very seldom use it for some.....for others, it's just not worth carrying it around any more than a knapsack filled with rocks.

I've never had a 4x4 car or truck. However, there are those rare occasions when I wish I did.

This summer I purchased some ATV's and a trailer. Therefore we are getting more adventurous. Most of the places we've gone with them so far have pretty good roads so the 2WD Prerunner I have has been just fine.

But I wonder. Do any of you haul some ATV's on a trailer where 4x4 was really a requirement? I guess the real question is about the trailer. If it's bad enough to need 4x4, aren't you going to have problems with the trailer and gear. In other words, if you can't use 2WD then you shouldn't be trailering through it?

I don't have much experience in that regard so I am curious about other people's experience.

    Thanks!

You don't need 4wd hauling when you have a load on the rear end that's a lot of traction there. Another thing you can do is put sand bags in back of truck to give it a lot more traction.
