No amp. When I initially started the project, I only changed head unit. It slightly improved the stock speaker sound. Then I did the fronts and was impressed with the upgrade. A lot of members on here say you have to have an amp. I don't necessarily think that's true or at least I haven't found that to be true.

I agree with you on that. I really don't intend to run an amp. There is such a large difference in power between the stock head unit and an even mediocre aftermarket one that I imagine it will more than suffice for my needs.

I put this in when I redid my system. http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-KTP-445U-4-channel-Power-Amplifier/dp/B003VVYL46

I have the exact same system in my wife's 4Runner without the power pack. It makes a huge difference in my opinion. Just cleaner sound for after market speakers. On a side note my wife is pissed and wants one now. It is small and mounts clean tucked away.

    My 2 cents.

I ordered some speakers today. Found a good set of Focal Performance PS 165V on sale thru Crutchfield for $299.99 and the JBL GT7-6 coaxials for the rear for $63.99. I found a great pack of Dynamat Xtreme on Amazon for $169.99 for 36 sq. ft. to do the doors, rear trunk area and the floor. I don't think that I plan to add subwoofers and an amplifier. I plan to replace the head unit with an Apple Car Play unit, but not sure what I am going to use. I priced the install out at Car Toys for a whole system and it was near $5k.........

I think I will buy some new tires and a lift instead!

Yeah that's the plan! Honestly, the audio is not exceptionally hard to do; I was just feeling lazy but was reinvigorated by the astronomical price lol. I am going to cherry pick a good head unit and amp/subwoofer down the way but this will do for now until I can find a rocking deal!

I know, I know........I am sure I will want more performance, but I have heard from a few guys who are pretty happy with a similar setup. I am going to give it a shot and go from there.

get a basic 4 channel amp, run the front two, bridge the back two to your sub... huge improvement generally speaking.

I don't want to run a sub, or at least I don't think I do. I really want a good coaxial in the rear that will hit with a bit of bass. I ordered the JBL GT7-6 for the rear but I am still looking. The Alpine KTP-445U Power Pack is a pretty sweet setup that I wouldn't mind running with a new head unit, but I am having trouble deciding on which rear speakers to run.

your system will sound much better eliminating the rears and adding a sub... just trying to help... not sure why you don't want to run a sub, but it does make a huge difference adding the full spectrum, and not leaving part of it effectively out.

Yeah, not to piss in your Cheerios, but you're going to be disappointed if you have any expectation of "hitting with a bit of bass" in the door speakers, especially without an amp. One 8" or 10" sub won't shake you to death but will allow the door speakers to better handle the highs/mids while the sub will make the lows sound so much better.

It's hard to say honestly. I don't know if you have ever sound-deadened before, but it makes a huge difference in sound quality. If I am correct, the stock head unit only pushes 8W RMS x channel, as opposed to aftermarket head units with 14-22 RMS x channel. A new head unit is on the agenda, but honestly, I can't find what I want yet. When I do the head unit, the amps and sub will come. I am not buying an audio controller to patch or cut the stock harness only to replace it very soon. I would love to find a good headunit that supports Apple Car Play with little/no issues.

It's always so expensive when I get to talking to guys on this forum! But, it does make more sense to do the whole system at once.
