I work a bit in operations for the business I'm employed at. GM's tend to hold together okay for the first 100K miles. After that, all guess are off. It seems like the transfer case and differentials are the first mechanical things to fail.

If you can get a loaded $55k Chevy truck for $40k, do that!!!

Then turn right around and sell it for $50k, buy the Tacoma, and you'll have 10k to mod the 'Yota with!

A $55K Chevy, sold for $40K, is only worth $30K the minute you drive it off the lot.

Sad but true. Also the demand for Silverados second hand sucks. We have no problems selling old Fords at work if we decide to get rid of them that way. Old GM's seem to stick around :(.

Oh hi guys, I herd dat Toyota is gonna put a derzul v8 in the Tacoma. Should I wait. I think it dumb to pay more for mid size when full size is same price and get same EM pee geez. Oh and by the way, that front end look so dum.

Personally I would not touch GM..Chevy service here is terrible. Long waits , Excuses for issues. Two week waits. That and the reliability would give me pause...Especially at $40K Lots of people buy them though, So there's that. Good Luck!!

Never had a problem with any of our GM trucks, all have gone well past 100k with with the basic maintenance and tires, never a mechanical failure (one alternator). Past quality was mainly interior and has mostly been addressed lately (as have most brands, ever seen a Kia now versus ten years ago?). Service for any vehicle is based on the dealer, some are crap others are great so it all depends on your dealer network.

I was looking at the new Colorado and new Tacoma but just picked up a new CC 5.3 Silverado. Figured I would get more use out of it than a midsize and this will take me off road where I want to go (mainly scenic passes, fire roads, trails and beaches). Plus it will tow a boat, fit more people and has more gizmos with similar or a small hit in mpg. Very happy with the choice, does take up more space in the garage but the next garage will be much bigger.

Good luck OP, I would make your own choice on what fits you better. Honestly the new full size trucks are only around 6 inches wider and about 18 inches longer than a midsize.

I own both, a 2012 Tacoma and this June I just purchased a 2015 Silverado w/t for my business. The fit and finish of the new Silverado is very much improved, truck rides good, power is great and I'm netting around 18-20 city mpg in it and I'm not easy on the truck. I baby my Tacoma and I'm lucky to get 15-16 city mpg. Some say GM service is bad but to be honest that's just the luck of the draw with what dealer you have, the Chevy dealer has been equally as good and better then my Toyota dealer in some aspects. It all comes down to what your using the truck for really, as a work truck/towing the silvy has the taco beat, but hauling my family around and going camping etc. I prefer my Tacoma. The midsize truck also just feels more personable, I don't have to have my arm fully extended to reach the radio/hvac controls.

News to me. Been a dealer tech for years and only seen 1 diff fail (low fluid caused bearings to fail). Never seen a t-case fail. And we service tons of pipeline/oil well trucks along with normal customer vehicles.

We've gone 3 for 4 on transfer cases. Only one rear differential, though IMHO it was caused by the transfer case change. It seems when you mess with the powertrain sometime that happens.

I work in agriculture. Similar duty cycle IMHO to oilfield but a bit more actual 4x4 use then some oilfield companies.

On two of them it just wouldn't go into 4WD anymore. The dealer diagnosed that it was the transfer case and they were working again after the swap. The last one I think actually split open and dumped. Not sure whether that was a chain coming apart or just manufacturer defect.

None of the trucks were my truck at work. I've only ran Fords and Dodge. GM, in my very humble opinion, is kind of the Vanilla of the auto industry. Okay mechanically, okay drive, okay power, okay vehicle, and okay reliability. Nothing special. I wouldn't scare someone off of one but I wouldn't go praising it either.

I did own a 2001 GMC Sierra GFx Z71 that lost 2 cylinders, the transfer case, and a couple of wheel bearings in the few years I had it, but it was at about 150K at that point. My ex-wife also had a 2012, I think, GMC Sierra but it was only around about 6 months before she took off.

So we are referring to fleet trucks that the drivers don't own and beat the shit out of them at any chance possible?

Yes, lol, all fleet. I agree that our trucks are worked hard. Then again, isn't what fails and what doesn't in fleet use a good judge of a truck.

On my last F150 all that failed was one rear shock in 200K. Actually, we've only had 2 Fords not make the 200K mark without a major hiccup. Dodges have been absolute crap. I've replaced several ECM's trying to get the gremlins out of mine and the transmission is already pretty suspect as well. Anyways, again, I'm not trashing GM. I'm just pointing out the issues I've seen with them at my place of work :).

As a general rule, a mid size truck cannot stand up to a full size for near the same price for livability. The full size truck generally wins hands down in about every catagory. But, if it's Toyota mid size, you have two things working for you, fewer repairs if you keep it and the best resale value going if you don't . so if you live for the present, get the Chevy.....if not, get the Toyota.
