Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Simple things first, look for any vacuum leaks. Clean the IAC and throttle body.

Was anything done to the truck (mods, wheeling, etc) before this started?

Did you have any recent work done?

    Is the CEL on?

Might be worth it to change it out, and see. Its cheap, and easy to DIY.

If you need one fast, you should be able to get one at a local auto parts store. Otherwise, I would try TRD Parts 4 U, or some other online retailers.

Ya, your truck wont start all the time...

JK man, have you changed spark plugs, cap and wires or the battery lately?

How many miles do you have on it?

When was the last time you did change the spark plugs? Have you checked the throttle cable to make sure it's within spec travel?

169,000 miles, Plugs & wires never changed, if plugs were bad wouldn't it run bad all the time, she runs great, just that sometimes , about once a month this happens.

WOW maintenance 101 bro, change those plugs and while your at it do the wires too...

If it can't spark it can't start, might be getting just enough spark to turn it over. But they are pretty bad if they have never been changed. Have you done any of the regularly scheduled maintenance?

When was the last time you changed the oil?

Hello, I'm brand new to this forum. Desperate for some help before I drop hundreds in a local shop.

My husband's 1999 Tacoma runs like a champ and is well maintained with 160K. A couple years ago, after driving hundreds of miles on a road trip, the engine would not start, wouldn't turn over or make any clicking noises. All the instrument lights come on. Wouldn't start even if shifted into neutral or another gear. This problem was rare but has become more and more frequent. Now it happens on a bi-weekly basis, and it's always when the truck has been driven over 60 mph for at least ten minutes. Stop to get gas, and he'll be stranded for 45 minutes. New battery, new keys, new starter. When that didn't solve the problem, we took it back, and the shop that installed the starter said it could be the after-market alarm (from the previous owners) screwing things up. They said they disconnected the alarm but also managed to disconnect the PIIA fog lights we installed the previous winter, so now we're looking at chasing some wires to get this thing functional again.

We are thinking maybe a bad connection between the ignition and starter? What are your thoughts?

Any help is most appreciated. THANK YOU!
