Nice thing was I got the truck for $4000
Usually, I drive my truck until the gas light comes on, and then proceed to fill it up. I'm just wandering with a 2001 Tacoma XtraCab with the 2.7 4 cylinder engine, w/4wd how long I can go with the gas light on?

im pretty sure the low fuel light kicks on with 3 gallons left. so whatever your avg mpg has been, times that by 3 and that's roughly how many more miles you have to go.

or you can just drive till the engine stops, then you will know how many miles you can get :p

I would say never let the light come on.

Some fuel stations are less then good when it comes to filtering the fuel from OLD tanks. So you can get sediment and other stuff building up in your gas tank..

Once you get low that stuff can get into your system and clog the filter or worse..

Try and fill up at the half way point for long life on the fuel filter and other parts...

isnt the opening of the fuel system at the bottom of the tank and wouldn't the dirt and crap go to the bottom of the tank?

Agreed. The other thing is keeping your fuel pump cool. I try not to get it below a 1/4 tank. You can suck up all sorts of crap from the tank. Not a good idea.

I try not to let it go below 1/2 tank, never below 1/4. For sedament reasons said above, and now with the cold setting in, water/condensation building up on the inner empty parts of the tank. So the les gas in your tank, the more water will build up and settle at the bottom and get sucked up when you try to get that light to go on.

...and you only have to change the oil if/when the oil light comes on too, right?...
i dont trust my fuel gauge, i can go 120 miles on the first 1/4 tank and only 60 on the second quarter. i base my next stop for gas on the miles ive gone since the last stop not on what the gauge is telling me. i dont think ive ever seen the low fuel light on before.

20190906_122650.jpg I ran out of gas 1st time in my 2nd Gen 2008 2.4L six cylinder. The trip odometer I set to zero when light came on (as I read another Tacoma owner do also), had around 40 miles on that trip odometer. The used car dealer I bought my truck from, who specializes in Tacomas and Tundras, I thought told me 100 miles when light comes on, but that doesn't make sense. Yet, that was my MO on Friday when I ran out of gas, that I had another sixty miles available.

This has been proven false by me.

I NEVER get gas until the light is on, and usually push it another 10-20 miles before filling up. My 2003 4runner was still on the original fuel pump and filter at 257K miles. It ran perfectly when I traded it in.
