What should I do with my hood?

I bought my truck with plasti dip on the hood, and decided to tear it off. As you can see the hood is completely wreaked. What should I do with it?

I'm still peeling the dip off...

 

Wrap it in this. Not too expensive, black would match almost anything, sounds doable for most do it yourselfers.

Soak the hood in WD40 followed by a pressure washer

 

What year is it? ill take it off your hands! JK I read about that WD40 trick, that should work. Let it soak in, good luck!

 

Trade it to another member that wants a hood with a scoop.

 

Most folks say the plasti dip will peal right off. Is it not coming off? I wonder about paint damage on the hood. Worse case scenario, you could sell the hood with the scoop pretty easily. Or, you could have it repainted. Good luck with it.

 

Not when it has been baking in the sun! I had it on the tailgate, and it was easy to remove. The hood has been a bitch!

 

Rip it off and get it painted.

 

I'd pull it off, strip it and paint it or wrap it. More than likely the PO dipped it because I'd the paint damage.

 

x2. I don't think there is a whole lot of options with that extent of paint damage on that hood.

 

This is my thought too. Plenty of documented cases of whole-car dipping w/o any negative side effects after years of use in all weather conditions. I'm guessing that the previous owner had issues and when he saw the price difference between having it professionally painted to fix or some plastidip to cover up he opted for the latter solution. I'd be real surprised if this actually caused that issue. Did paint come off with the plastidip or was there noticeable ridges where the dip settled before hardening like those layers were already there? Those two pieces of information could go a long ways in trying to figure out which came first.

It would have to be sanded smooth first otherwise those layers would likely show through and/or cause adhesion issues.

 

There were ridges you could see under the plastidip. I thought it was just the clear coat, only to find out there was no paint under those spots!

 

Probably going to do this. Have to sand it down first.

 

That's all you need to know right there then. Could have been a clear coat issue or whatever before that caused that but if the ridges were present in the plastidip and there was no paint or clear coat chunks it was clearly like that before he plastidipped it and just did it as a money saving step. Otherwise this would have been the first post I think I've ever seen where plastidip caused paint issues. Usually it preserves the paint underneath quite well and can help to protect it even from minor blemishes & scratches that would have otherwise scratched the surface. Sand down those edges and wrap away!

 

Do I just sand around the spots with no paint?

 

If all you care about is smoothness for vinyl then yeah, you just need to take those edges off so you'll feather it back a little bit to blend those lines so it's a smooth surface to the touch. This way the vinyl will lat flat and you won't see those spots after you wrap it.
