Manual/ECT question

So i keep reading that when ECT is engaged the truck has more power. The manual transmission doesn't have ECT right? So it's like it always has more power?

 

ect controls shift points only I thought? So no need in manual? Shift later in rpm?

 

Isn't it just changing shift points?

ECT means electronically controlled transmission. This is a holdover acronym from when it was first introduced into toyotas in the 90s or something and transmissions had a lot of hydraulic controls. Modern transmissions are electronically controlled already so turning on electronically controlled transmission is redundant, but that's not to say the button does nothing. Pressing ECT causes the transmission to always anticipate that the driver is about to accelerate rapidly. This is in contrast to normal operation which is to assume that once the vehicle is up to speed any accelerations will be gradual. Thus it can stay in a higher gear to save fuel. It doesn't create any more power in the engine, it makes the transmission more responsive to throttle inputs so it feels more powerful.

Ultimately you as the driver have to ask politely for your transmission controller to shift so that you can accelerate and it gets around to it eventually, probably. With ECT on it gets around to it sooner than it otherwise would be bothered.

None of that is required in a manual because the driver controls the transmission with a big caveman-esque lever and usually the driver knows when they are going to accelerate.
