I will definitely check the label. I believe my rear end does not require additive, I understand the sport models do

It is real simple: Sport TRDs model year 2005-2008 had a limited slip differential, needs the additive or Mobil 1, etc... made for Limited slip clutch packs inside those differentials.

ALL Tacomas 2009+ (unless some kind of special order or non-factory diff) have normal open differentials and electronic traction control (TRAC, AUTO LSD, TRAC OFF) that uses the brake pads to slow wheel spin. The OFF ROAD TRD also has an open diff except it has a selectable, electronic locker. It is not "open" when locked... which is only for emergency stucks, per Toyota.

Ok. I'm pretty technically inclined. But I've spent 15 minutes under my truck and I swear it looks nothing like these pics. 2005 double cab long bed. It seems like maybe the transfer has a 24mm on one side and then a small (less than 10mm) hex on a bottom reservoir marked "check"?

And I have absolutely no clue where the front diff drain and fill is.

    Can anyone help?

Start inside drivers front wheel and follow the CV axle from the hub towards center of truck ... It goes into the front diff. You should be able to figure drain and fill from there. The front diff is significantly smaller than the rear diff "pumpkin."

Remove both skid plates. It's located above the rear skid on the drivers side. Just drained mine today. Waiting on Amazon for Royal Purple.

Ok here's the question I just realized that assures I'm an idiot either way it's answered:

If my truck is 2wd do I even have a front diff or a transfer case?

    Yep. I'm an idiot.

Wish I was trolling. I'll get back in here with a better question soon.

    Thanks guys.

I changed the rear yesterday and was hitting my checklist on the maintenance manual. Guess I should have paid more attention to the part that says "(4wd only)"

I'll take a flyer on this one. I'm sure I'll have some questions on the drum brakes which are next.

    I appreciate all the help.

Worked on the drums today as well. Start by spraying some penetrating oil on the axle hubs well in advance.

Front bilstein 5100 with OME 884 w/trim pack, 17" fuel trophy wheels wrapped with 32" toyot open country m/t, bakflip fibermax tonneau cover, Avec 30" led light bar behind lower grille, marathon seat covers in max 5 camo pattern, trimmed front and rear mud flaps, more to come.
From my understanding the check is on the trans itself not the trans case. The trans case would be on the other side of that plug. Hope this helps. And the front differential is kind of hidden but once u see it you will know what ur looking at.

Completed front/rear differential and transfer case with Royal Purple 75-90w. Not sure if I got 3 full qts in the the rear diff. after filling the front diff. and transfer case, but it may not have been exactly level. Got to love Amazon Prime- HPS 5w/30 oil, 75-90w gear oil, and bottle pump delivered to my door= 2 days. Finish up tomorrow and take it to the test track/canal.
