A 4.0 would pull that Casita OK (mostly BECAUSE it's a Casita), so the 3.5 with about the same power, same. Your Casita is much more aerodynamic than my wedge-faced, 8-ft wide 3800lb (loaded) trailer. You don't have the 1-ft overhang on both sides, should be a nice flow since truck/trailer are same width.

The only time the 4.0 struggled a bit was on steep grades with said trailer, passenger, dog, gear, tools, two extra 20lb LP tanks, four gallons gas, Leer shell. By struggled I mean sometimes having to drop into 2nd gear at 5000rpm to hold 50mph on the 6%-7% Interstate grades. Notice I said 'INTERSTATE'. The reason being you're struggling to hold 50mph and other vehicles are flying by at 65-75mph and it's a pain to jockey a trailer into line to pass an even slower 18-wheeler.

Picky-picky, I know, mostly 3rd gear would do for steep Interstate grades and hold 55-65mph at say 3500-4000rpm with some acceleration ability. When on steep winding backroads where the speed limit is 35-45mph, no sweat.

Fuel mileage? I calculated two fillups and got 10-12mpg, after that figured why even bother wasting time calculating it's gonna suck.

I imagine the 3.5 will have about the same towability as the 4.0. The nice 6AT with ECT and bumpshift should make for a nice towing experience.

It will all be subjective anyway, Bella. The only way for an inquirer to really know is hookup their own trailer, not depend on some other guy's opinion.

IMO the 3.5 will have very similar towability to the 4.0. Power #'s are about the same, 40 more HP but at 1000rpm higher. The 2016 is about 200lbs heavier curb weight across the board. The 6AT I think will make for a better towing experience because of the ECT and bumpshift.

I am in about the exact situation as you, and also wanting to know if the 16 will at least tow as good as my 13. My towing results pretty much mirror your experiences, typically 3rd gear will keep 50mph up 6% grades.

Here's where my question lies: 13' transmission using 1-4 gears for towing (not knowing the exact gear ratios off hand) keeping out of 5th because overdrive, having decent towing experience for my given load (approx 5000lbs loaded with wight dist. hitch). VS 16' transmission, also using 1-4 gears for towing (again not knowing the exact gear ratios off hand) but now keeping out of 5th and 6th because both are overdrive ratios.

I assume the possibly shorter 1-4 gear ratios will help with lower speed towing, but will new shorter 4th be still tall enough to cruise 65 mph without over-revving the engine for long periods of time and killing what is already low mpgs (10-12)?

That's an interesting question. Towing was "like 22nd on the list" according to Mike Sweers so we'll have to wait and see.

The Casitas tow great. My gen 1 3.4 can easily go 70 mph on relatively flat or slightly uphill. I live in the Rockies though. So most of my camping requires climbing into the thin air mountains. Not only do the inclines cause troubles, the thin air makes towing more difficult too. Going up one road I normally take can be stressful because cars start to pile up behind me (rural highway not 4 lane interstate) and are hesitant to pass because me and my trailer are so long.
My gen 1 has only 190 hp and 220 ft lb of torque though. I think the extra HP would help more at highway speeds. As I mentioned I'd rather drive slow a few times a year than have a huge thirsty truck I have to drive 365 days a year. I am anxious to hear how the Tacomas tow 4,000+ lbs.

Thanks for sharing the first 3rd gen tow pics, cool. My dad towed much more than that for thousands of miles on a 70hp Moskvich back in the old country. Load that thing down and tell us how it really tows!

Tell us how you really feel.

The 3rd Gen just hit the market. So speculation > actual experiences at this point in time.

If you don't want conversations just unsub for a month and come back to see updates if any owners have decided to town with their truck.

Or you can just buy one and tow something instead on waiting for others.
