Just a bunch of old crap
Best strategy would be to start asking yourself some questions before picking gear:
    • Where do you normally take your truck? Off-road a lot, city streets most of the time, etc.
    • How far away do you normally get from resources like food/shelter/water/home?
    • What season is it? Temps (high and low within 24 hours) and what precipitation can you expect to face?
    • Any medical conditions? Need meds? Not in shape? Bad knee/back, etc?
Now pick your gear to prepare for these situations and conditions. What you need to carry at all times will greatly differ based on changes in the above questions. Regardless, here are the basics you should always carry, with examples:
    • A good blade. Your choice. A bushcrafting knife is my personal preference because they are designed to WORK and not just look good. (A Morakniv knife is $20 and strikes a ferro rod well). Multitools are heavy and in most cases never even used. A knife can do 90% of what a multitool can do. I always have a good multitool in my center console, and I'd still bring it if I had to leave the truck behind and go on foot though.
    • A way to start fire, plus a backup (lighter AND ferro rod/striker)
    • Enough portable drinking water to get to the next available water (64oz water is a good start. Lifestraw for when water is nearby but needs treatment. Always carry a Nalgene bottle or way to transport water over distance)
    • First aid (meds you normally take, pain meds, basic bandages, antiseptic wipes, Ace bandage, super glue, tape - ways to clean and close a wound or secure an injured joint)
    • Shelter - your truck is a shelter. If you need to leave it behind, a midsize tarp and some paracord can go a long way.
    • Clothing - always bring clothing suitable to your current location and climate. Whatever you would wear if you had to walk XX miles anywhere along your travels. Always have good walking shoes and socks!
    • Lighting - while lighting is a convenience, it's not a lifesaver. I love headlamps (I carry the Black Diamond ReVolt with USB charging capabilities or alkaline use) but I don't always carry one. In my truck at all times is this simple little USB-chargeable flashlight that would give me a couple hours of useful light. Plus, it's battery also has an output so it can act as a little bit of backup battery for your cellphone or other USB device.
    • Food - I've gone days without a single calorie, so I never carry any unless I'm going out in the middle of nowhere. I used to carry a 3600 calorie block of Datrex bars which is only $9 and can be rationed to last you for 3 days on the move, or longer if less mobile or stationary.
    • Put it all in a light but durable bag/pack that is suitable to carry to the nearest resources, or home (whichever is closer). You'll be best off having a comfortable backpack with good shoulder straps and even a good waist belt if things start getting heavy (like extra water)
Gear choices will vary greatly, depending on your budget and experience with this type of equipment. I've tried all levels, and the best of the best isn't always the most necessary. Read lots of reviews, ask around, etc. and go with what people have had success with. Status isn't what you're going for, here. There's no need for a $200 pack when a $30 one will work just fine. Same goes with your other gear.

Carry what you need to get from point A to the next available resources. Your human ingenuity and hopefully common sense will get you to the next point from there, and eventually home.

My only complaint is that he fails to mention the need for a flesh light in a survival situation.
