Man I feel old right now! Never got into any serious gaming, but used to play Lode Runner quite a bit (slow computers and amber screens)...first computer I built was an Apple II+ with the memory card gave it a whole 128k! Mother Board was one that was supposed to be scrapped but we patched it up, built a wood case with a Plexiglas top, and got most of the other parts from "Dumpster Diving" behind Apple in Cupertino back when you could do that kind of stuff! Last couple I have simply bought built boxes as it is cheaper than building them any more. 1st PC was an 8088 with a tiny hard drive....built a bunch after that, but bought the last 2.

Been a computer science faculty member for 45 years now, so I have been around a while. First PC I built was for the chess program I wrote. The first PC I built to play a graphical game on was for "Doom" of course. :)

The original Doom. Then Doom 2, Doom 3.

I often thing about building another gaming rig but consoles have come such a long way that the headache of patch after patch and choppy game play because the lack of patches drove me nuts. I'd get so irritated when I'd have to wait a month just to enjoy a game to it's fullest on the PC while my friends were playing it problem free on the XBOX and PS3.

Can't remember the specs but I had an underwhelming Dell desktop I built for playing Everquest when I was a kid. Ended up building better and better machines to run that game on, Eq was like crack

I hear that. I've spent countless hours over the years troubleshooting software and hardware compatibility issues, not to mention the game patch and driver issues that arise from time to time.

That being said, PC is still the way to go if you're willing to put in the time, effort, and a small fortune.

Yeah, I was sucked in Wow for a while. I have been a blizzard fan since the original starcraft and Diablo. Starcraft was the first online game for me.
    I didn't build a computer until 2011 for Battlefield 3.

I agree, I guess I'm just not willing to spend the time and effort to do it. I don't game anymore, no time. lol.

Same. I used to be hardcore.. like 10 hours a day. I stick to my phone now and play cheesy iOS games just because I have no time like I used to.

Early versions (this started in 1968) were in FORTRAN, which was about the only language with any portability. Current program started in 1995 and is pure ANSI C.
