Hey everyone, I've preordered a dcsb Sport in white and wanting some opinions on the factory roof rack

Its my understanding that they changed the design this year so that the crossbars fold into the side rails instead of being separate so am thinking about adding it for 400-450 installed.
But it has a weight limit of 100lbs, is this bc of the roof design so even aftermarket racks like Thule wouldn't hold more?

Also the bed extender, for the ones who have it, do you find it useful and easily removable when you don't use it?
Can you fit an ATV or golf cart in a Short bed with it on?

    Thanks for the help!

Bars have always folded into the side rails. The 2005 to 2015 will fit the 2016 Tacoma

I added the bed extender because i wanted the short bed (easier parking where i work, and i think it looks better), but i like the extender. I had one on my titan and it was useful.

Ok thanks, so the Parts dept guy just assumed the rack was a new design since he has the prior versions in stock but system didn't show if they would fit 2016 but the bed extender did

interesting b/c I read somewhere that the prior models had a 75lb rating compared to 100lbs this year

I have the bed extender on my sport trac. I use it all of the time and can remove it easily if i want. You can probably get one for $200 or less if you shop around. Worth the price

I want both. And really like the factory unit since it is one less thing to have to worriy about storing when not in use. Like the ability to just move the bars along the side when not in use. Pretty cool imho.

I have both the oem roof rack and the oem bed extender. I use the bed extender often and it comes in handy. The roof rack is also a nice addition, but I'm not worried about the weight limit because my rack is only going to have some camp lights on it and will only be holding light items (camping chairs, propane stove, truck bed tent.. etc) Have the dealership install the bed extender. Get the roof rack later and install it yourself since it's very easy. I got the bed extender when I purchased the truck and I got it for $400 installed. The roof rack I bought new on ebay for $230 and installed it myself in under an hour.

How does it install? Do you have to drill holes in your roof?

No. remove weather strips, there's sections of painted tape, under the tape there's nuts in the roof. the roof rack brackets screw into those existing nuts. it comes with neoprene washers, but I also put gasket maker around my bolts for double protection from leaks. If you go slowly and read the directions, its an easy installation

Have you lifted your 85 pound kayak that high before? You must be really strong.

I had the bed extender in my 2006 Frontier and it was easy to put together and install.

I like the idea of the roof rack but it reminds me of a minivan/ridgeline roof rack.

Just a heads up, you can buy a brand new factory roof rack off eBay for around $230ish. That's about half of what you are looking at spending

Not sure if you're serious but my wife and I can easily lift it up and on our current rack since its a rather long tandem
Having the truck bed to stand on should make it even easier

I have the JLow kayak carriers (pictured earlier in the thread). I don't push the boat into the carriers from the back and the bed. They aren't roller carriers and the kayaks are held vertical instead of flat. I lift the two kayaks I have straight into the rack from the side. At 40 pounds each it isn't too much trouble at all, especially with a small step stool I use. Add some cross wind and they become sails. :(

If the kayak was twice that weight, it would be a different matter especially since I am doing this by myself.

If I get bigger boats down the road, I'll probably move to a different holder and rack system to make it easier.

    Cheers
