Yeah, the 285 comment is just f'n derp. "Hey, guess what? I added a bunch of rubber but didn't regear and now it sucks"

    No shit

Related: I like the seats on my TRD. Are they different in non-TRDs?

Not related: I used to work at a golf course. We stayed late while folks finished up their rounds, but the pro-shop closed. The course marshal had short, fat, old fingers. One day, after close, I was walking through the parking lot killing time when I saw Mr Marshal holding his thumb by his belt buckle. Oh shit, that wasn't his thumb.

Who puts over sized tires on a truck and expects it to drive the same after?

    1) Put a better exhaust system on it
    2) Get an alarm installed and stop using the auto lock crap (I hate that too)
    3) Get some padded seat covers, they work wonders

I guess at this point I can't reply to all the comments, but thanks for everyone's opinions/comments...most of them atleast. I'm glad most of you sound like you "love" your trucks. I don't hate mine, I'm just not raving about it.

First world problems indeed, but it's a big check to write to just chalk it up to that.

And no I didn't expect the larger tires to not adversely affect performance, but I didn't expect it to drop performance as much as it did. My commute is about 15 miles highway and with cruise on at 70mph it downshifts on 1% upward grades that are barely visible to the eye. That's weak.

I'm keeping the truck through winter atleast and I may work on remedying some of this, but all I was trying to do was voice my experience thus far. I'll go back to posting newb questions without searching first.

I k ow people have probably given advice on fixing some of the problems but here are a few more since I'm lazy and won't read all 4 pages.

For sound, aftermarket exhaust might help. I don't think my 07 sounds weak but I've also only ever owned this truck and cars before it.

For power, a lot of people regear when adding 285s. I know what you mean about cruise control sucking with them. Mine has become unusable due to the truck being confused by my tire size. However, the truck feels decently powerful and I didn't regear. I have a V6 though. Forgot what you said you have.

Aftermarket fixes are part of the fun of owning a tacoma. I honestly think that when you buy one, you're paying for the fact that the truck will last 300,000+ miles almost without fail and that at 150,000 miles they have barely lost any resale value. They by far aren't perfect. Otherwise nobody would do most of the crazy aftermarket shit we do. I love my truck mostly because of all the shit I've added on. I like the look of it base, but it's all the work and extra pieces that make it mine. It's a never ending project. I know a lot of people don't want a project truck but then this one probably isn't for them.

I used to have a BMW and those cars are too close to perfect for me. There is very little to tinker with.

If I was getting a truck that I wanted to leave mostly stock I would go for Silverado, Sierra, or F-150. If those don't have the power for you on 285s, I don't know what to say!

I hope that in the end it works out for you!

    Cool, good points and advice.
I think I will end up doing exhaust and will learn to live with the lack of cruise...still annoying though..and it is a V6.
I ended up with a Tacoma (a short bed at that) over a full size truck because I am the guy who doesn't really need bed space. Not much goes in there except my hunting and fishing gear and hockey bag because it smells so bad.
Anyway, thanks again and nice truck you have there!

Thanks! I don't really know how much regearing would run somebody. It's probably ridiculously expensive but I think that would fix the cruise control.

I'm the same way about bed space. I would have gotten a short bed but this was my grandpas truck so it was available. I only ever use it for camping stuff.

Hey bud, if you up your performance parts a bit you may not have to worry about cruise control. Your larger tires are heavier and take more power to get rolling, so your truck has to compensate by dropping a gear when it needs it. I know not everyone wants to or can afford it, but with my supercharger, I cruised through the grapevine (big mountainous road) in 6th gear and never bogged down at all, and some of those grades are pretty steep. Just saw my truck go into boost often on its own and never worried about it :D

I can relate on the cruise control issue and the less-than-comfortable seat for my 6'2" self. Whenever I drive with CC on, I can't help but laugh when I drive past people with their windows down, because they hear this screamin' V6 coming up, but not a whole lot happening... Better just bump up to 35s!

You'll find the mods that work well for what you want to do with it; I really like the idea of the "bloody bed" mod, would be a nice break from the "bloody deck" boat mod

I'm close to 6'2" and I have zero issues with the seat. I really think it depends what kind of car you're coming from and used to. I will say Tacoma's do not share the same nice interior amenities that other trucks have, but then again, your 2015 will still be worth a pretty penny in 10 years and still be running strong.

Seems like the only way to make these trucks nice is to modify them so they aren't so crappy right out of the box.
    Sad.

Other than changing the transmission oil to Redline, installing a Snugtop, and doing ND4's fog light mod my truck is bone stock and is awesome out of the box. I don't do trails but I do lots of forest roads that require high clearance and 4 wheel drive. I've got the brush pin stripes to show it too ;)

I think a lot of issues start popping up when people start throwing aftermarket parts on these trucks without any thought or research. Most people seem to think you can throw a cheap-o lift on a truck and add big tires without changing anything else and that's simply not the case.

I was thinking about the tailgate, stereo, leaf springs, the cab mounts, the bed itself, the battery location and others. But there are some great DIY mods to fix a lot of the other problems, like squeaky window seals, compass and temp display, a/c control lights burning out early and others. That's not even bringing up the frame that won't last ten years.
It's like a menu of items that need fixing with these trucks.

Love my 2015 also. Only thing that disappointed me was the squeaky door seal issue, but local dealership re-adjusted my doors and it has fixed the noise, for now. Oh and the dent in the hood kind of sucked before I punched it back out from inside.

Probably depends on where you came from. This is my first brand new vehicle and first truck. Maybe if I had owned other new trucks to compare to I would find some lack of features to complain about, but coming from an older (and neglected) Toyota Matrix, my new Tacoma is heaven.

Also highly agree with ^ this and is why I am not in a rush to add after market lifts/suspension type stuff till I have a full understanding and can make real decisions.
