So i have a Extang tonneau cover on my 2015...

It looks like it will work on the 3rd gen? length and width of the 3rd gen are the same? and just bed depth is different?

I like the look and functionality of the toyota cover for the 3rd gen, but it looks like they are't made/design right with the end of it being pushed up 1/2"+ at the tail gate

Installed my first dimple then removed it.
I think the 1/2 inch sticking up was due to not closing the cover before closing the tail gate.

I will be buying the TruXsport Roll up. IT was water proof and being vinyl, very light, and half the costs

I have one of these. It has held up pretty well for about 8 years. Then the velcro starts to fall apart on the edges and they won't stay down. Also mine will not lock. But it's worth it when tailgating at football games to stash to cooler and grill under there.

My brother used to have one like that. It is prone to damage by a sharp object and velcro issues after several years. For him, it held up well until something he carried made a cut on the vinyl. He kept using it like that until he changed the Tacoma for a Tundra... he now has the tri-fold tonneau and told me that it is the way to go.

I like the roll-n-lock covers... but if my truck comes with the tri-fold, it will do just fine for me as well...

The trifold doesn't work for me. If I want to utilize the bed, I want to be able to utilize 100% of it, not have 2/3rd of the top blocked off. The TruXedo works OK but like I said it's a little floppy and the velcro goes quick after 5 or 6 years you'll be buying another one. Also it looks like crap when stowed IMO, rolled up against the back window. I hate having to roll or fold something up everytime I want to use my truck bed. I guess that's just a personal thing. Do they really make that much difference on MPGs? Are we talking 1 or 2 MPG difference???

The one that comes on the 2016 does not appear to lock down flush and looked pretty janky when I saw it in person.

with the extang, it locks into the bed rail system with thumb screws up from and some quick snap connectors at the tail gate. the whole thing comes off in 30 seconds and is light and easy to move around. Ive taken it off countless times when ive need to use the whole bed, quickly with no issues

it looks like that extang 2.0 is $820 for basically the same exact thing as the toyota one for $650

Does the Toyota cover remove easily? Would love someone to post a Youtube video of the temporary tear down & set up process. Also I think the Toyota cover does not sit flush on the tailgate. It looks like it's lifting slightly on the corner when I looked at one and the same thing in pics.

After eight years something better will come along. The velcro is strong and may get stronger as the years go by. I was hesitant to get a velcro roll up but I was pleasantly surprised by its strength and ability to make the top ripple free and smooth. Also could not open it unless the tailgate was down.

The Undercover on my 08 was a terrible choice. Like a giant auto trunk that killed the use of the bed for anything taller than the side walls. removeing and installing it was not joyful

Problem with trifold is one can only use 2/3rd of the bed unless they remove it. For $300 bucks the TruxSport is worth it. But yeah have to be careful with sharp objects.

Velcro is old "technology" so I'd doubt much improvement but you could be right

Since I first posted this, I've been paying close attention to all the pics of the fatory cover. Everyone is sticking up at the tail gate....

Can someone with a 16 and tonneau cover take a pic with it closed properly? If they even do?

Not as bad as some of the others but you can see a small gap between the seal and plastic bed rail near the tailgate.

Wow. That doesn't look very good. It's a shame that Toyota does this from the factory and calls it good.

"Small gap?" LOL, that is the worst fitting cover I've ever seen. I can't believe Toyota settled for such crap.

So what's the verdict? Are the bed dimensions the same? Will a cover from a 2nd gen fit the new truck?

Went to a dealer lot to measure both beds. Third generation is 1 1/2 longer on the toprails. Width is the same as before.
Contacted Lund and Extang and both said that the covers for the new Tacoma will not be available until the end of the year. Using a 2nd generation cover will get you what is shown on the red O/R above.

I stopped by a Phoenix retailer of tonneau covers a couple weeks ago and he tried to sell be the older Extang Solid Fold 2.0 for my 2016, said all it needed was a modified gasket for the cab end that he could do. He wanted $750 but I decided to wait and passed on the offer. Sounds like the new one's may be out now, will have to check it out.
