considering buying

My Toyota Sienna has gotten stuck in too may times trying to drive off the asphalt in Death Valley and the Black Rock Desert in California, so I decided to sell it and buy a used truck on Craigslist. I'm naturally attacked to the Tacoma since I've owned Toyotas for a while. I want to be able to drive on old mining roads, dirt roads washed-out by rains or drive in sand without getting stuck. Can someone please briefly compare and contrast the terms:

*4X4;
*TRD;
*prerunner; or
*any other term I'm missing,

or point me to a place where such info can be digested by a first time truck buyer confused by these terms?

Also, what is the major difference between pre and post 2005 models.

what I mean to say what package do I need? I guess not a prerunner because it is 2x4. Is TRD simply anothe way of saying Toyota's 4X4? What I'm getting at is, what do I need to look for if I say want to spend $9,000 USD? I'm looking for a basic basic explaination as to what I need or can get away with. Thanks.

 

A prerunner is not a package. Just basically a 4x4 without the "4x4" as in no front diff, axle, driveshaft, transfercase ect. on the truck. And TRD is just a package like rear diff locker different suspension ect.. Just like the SR5, Sport, and Base model there all just different packages with different options. And Welcome to TW!

 

for $9,000 you should beable to pick up and half decent 1st gen taco. what package will be depending on the mileage/condition of the truck. browse your local craigslist or whatever you use to see whats out there!
