Um, that's because one tire has a larger diameter. Which does effect mpg. I would believe if you had the same size tire, with one being lighter then the other. Mpg depends on driving style for the most part anyway.

Ummm, not that much of a difference to see 3~4 mpg. The difference in radius is maybe an inch over a 16 inch moment arm. That's 1/16th or 6.25%, not 15% difference in mileage. Go ahead and borrow a lighter set of wheels and tires in nearly the same size and you will be surprised.

OK so I'm currently running maxxis bighorns in 255 but don't want a sketchy time all this winter so looking at at's in the same size. Narrowed it down to either the st or st maxx. Last year we got a bit over 2 feet of snow at the house and I live in the middle of nowhere so its all country back roads that aren't "paved" just what we always called gray topped (spray tar then cover with fine gravel that packs in to become makeshift asphalt). I drive about 100 miles round trip daily and these will become my daily drivers to save the mt's for off road trips.

So question is, what would you guys suggest? Those that have driven in snow with either of these. Also how are the maxx's on longevity and wear? Any suggestions as to where to find a good deal on them as well would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again!

I have had my st Max's for just over a year and I think atleast 20-30k. They still look new, barely any wear. In the snow they are great. Had them out last winter in the deep stuff and they dug very well and I was t aired down. I have been very happy with them coming from my Goodyear kevlars.

Can't speak for the st's but the st max have the more aggressive side wall so kinda gives ya an idea. Also the st Max's drive great on the road. Very quiet and smooth. Again compared to my kevlars that I had.

Thank you very much for the insight. Now to try and find the best deal on them.

I ran into the same thing. Ended up cancelling my order and ordering from Tirerack for about $180 more for 5 tires as they had them in stock. They were at my house a few days later.

I got my KM2s mounted today. Stock Pro suspension with the swaybar still attached and a 1" block in the back. Looks like it should be fine as long as I leave the swaybar on. Without the swaybar I'm not sure what would happen as far as front clearance is concerned. The rear tire fully stuffed is about 1/4-3/8" from contacting the front side of the flare.

Not even close. I dropped my average 4 MPGs with a tire change. I haven't had a single tank even approach my previous average MPGs since upsizing in February 2014, even my all highway tanks are 3 MPGs worse than my prior average, and 7 MPGs worse than my prior best MPGs, all highway, and on the exact same trip.

Did you just change tire weight? That's all we are talking about.

I went from 245/75 OEM to 265/75 mild AT, both in P metric, with a difference of 8-10 lbs per tire.

Still changed the diameter and width of tire. How do you know your not losing the mpgs there??? I believe it when i see two of the exact same tire, with different weight, produce a significant change in mpg.

.79 inches of extra width and 1.18 inches of diameter don't cause a 25% loss in MPGs across the board all by themselves.

Does anyone know the max tire section width that can safely fit on a 7" wide wheel? Different Tire websites seem like they have different specs / recomendations!?! From what I can gather, I have a Stock 16" alloy wheel with a width of 7". I cannot verify that, but its the best info I can find.

The stock 16inch OR wheels are 7 in wide. The tire manufacturers typically publish rim width ranges based on the design of the sidewall, and they are only slightly conservative to appeal to more people. I have seen posts where people have mounted tires on overly wide wheels, but I have also heard that this promotes popping beads.

Thanks for the info guys. Reason I brought it up on here is because I ordered my BFG MT-255-85's, and thought they would be here by now, but the dude just called at said they are on a "National Back Order" and will not be anywhere until November / December. If that is the case, I may look at the Big Horns or the Toyo Open Country's. Or plan C - is to try to fit 285/75's on my 7" wheels and go with spacers.

I got the same answer from 4wd.com which is why I ordered from Tirerack since they actually had them sitting in stock.
