    So I finally saw a 2016 for the first time today and test drove it. A quicksand DCSB O/R manual. Overall impressions okay, but I concur with other reports of the engine being slightly anemic down low and waking up above 4k rpm. My only other experience with Tacoma is a 2015 SR5 manual. Never drove an auto Tacoma but I can imagine it being really underwhelming.

    Now the truck was quiet, the transmission was very nice with sure shifts (nicer than the 2015, although I don't remember it being particularly bad as some describe it). However I noticed rather annoying whistling sound, particularly in the 5th gear, but also in 6th gear. I wonder if it's a fluke, unbroken truck, or something inherent to the new powertrain. I hope not, because I could not live with it.

    Anyone else noticed it?

    You should've asked the dealership to test drive another one.

    They got two 2016s. One of them manual. Will certainly drive another one once it shows up.

    Can any M/T owners confirm they trucks are not exhibiting these noises?

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:

    No, I wasn't. The noise was there at highway speeds... say 60-80 mph. My wife noticed that as well. Pretty shitty sound to have in a brand new truck.

    Anyhow, we will see if this is/will be a common problem or not. I am going to test drive another one, if it's there, I am not buying the truck. It's f**king unacceptable.

    The whistling sound has something to do with the transmission. Ive got a 2015 4Runner that does it too. Im not sure what it is. I usually hear it come on when I accelerate. But it is a kind of subdued whirring sound. Wouldnt surprise me, the new tacoma seems to borrow from the 4 runner a bit.

    you sure the whistle is not from the side mirrors? 2014+ 4runners owners complain about that same whistle at highway speeds.

    I hear it at times but the music usually drowns out the whistle for me.

    The Tacoma I test drove was a manual, 2015 4Runner is auto only.

    Interesting. Maybe it's a function of speed indeed. If so, it is pretty crappy.... :(

    from the looks of it, the side mirrors look exactly like the 4runner mirrors. so I would imagine they would whistle the same.
