Agreed. On a trail the torque converter is really your friend. Not having to shift or play with the clutch is one less thing to fuck up on a difficult trail which means less chance to end up in a bad situation.

Not to mention carefully feathering rock or hill climbs with the brake and gas at the same time becomes impossible with a clutch thrown in the mix. I hate manuals offroad...

I am on my third Taco. The DC has plenty of room in the back seat. The other trucks are too wide for trails and strip mall parking.

I loved shifting the 6 spd when I got it, but over time the clutch being so stiff wore on me. Leg would start to twitch holding it in at red lights after a long day of work, and it could be challenging on trails or while towing. I missed a gear once towing another truck on an auto transport up a steep hill in the rain. It wasn't fun.

With autos having 5 or more gears now they seem to shift well enough for me to be happy with them.

Here's one the biggest reasons I switched: bed size! I know my 6.5ft F150 is longer than the 5ft Tacoma, but it's also wider. That seemingly minor thing literally doubled my cargo capacity today. I fit at least twice as many pallets in the F150 than I could in the Tacoma. The taco's D-rings (that I had to add) were on the bottom, usually covered by the pallets if I didn't position the stack in the middle of the bed. The plastic cleats are too flimsy to ratchet strap to so I never used them. Which means the pallets had to be stacked narrow ends forward. With the F150, I rotated the stack 90 degrees with the narrow ends point to the bed sides. That allowed me to have 2 stacks, plus 3 stacked vertically on the tailgate. So while I would have hauled 8-10 with the Taco, I have 25 stacked in the F150.

All strapped to the Ford cleat system that's a metal cleat, slotted into a metal E-track mount, bolted to the metal frame of the bed. I tightened the straps so much I could see the stacks compress, and nothing moved.

For me, I would like a pickup and I would like it to have a manual transmission. If I was only concerned about off-roading I don't think I would be buying a F150 or even a Tacoma for that matter, there are better vehicles to do that one job. I drive on pavement much more than I am off and I enjoy driving a manual more than an automatic, but do not begrudge anyone who wants an auto. For me its more engaging (no pun intended) and more fun....to each his own. It is however driving my purchasing decision from a full sized to a Tacoma (even considering a m/t is only avail in SB). I do not need the full size bed all of the time (especially because I have a utility trailer) but it would be good to have. If I could get a gas, manual trans Tundra/F150/Ram I would be seriously considering it especially at the price point of the Tacoma.

Why do any of those systems matter? (genuine question)
Isn't it just a screen with buttons?

I've messed with the dash computers in a Subaru while driving. I honestly feel like they are dangerous and prefer old-school radios. I haven't really used it much though. Honestly all the new technology is intimidating. Crap I never imagined would be useful in a car/truck.
I'm happy with the options in the XL as far as technology. I would just like the adaptive cruise control added.

Plus all these new dash computers make upgrading audio really difficult. You mess with the speakers and you may be messing with something else on the same circuit.

Good for you getting the 6.5ft bed.

    Short box = useless.

No the backseats look smaller. Maybe the front seats are all the way back?

I don't know if this is related, but when I went through the tour at the River Rouge plant last week. There were inspectors checking every door on every truck during the final inspection when the trucks were coming off the line. They were also using some type of electronic device that they held against the side of the truck when closing the doors. I thought one of the tour guides said something about checking the sound level, but don't hold me to that.

No they always do a final inspection but units have been slipping through. This will affect the assembly process and be implemented at the bodyshop level and final inspection will be alerted to watch for the defects i outlined to ford.

Offroad tuner shocks, factory skid plates, locker (if you don't get max tow which also includes a locker), hill descent control. I don't offroad much anymore, so I just wanted factory skid plates for road debris and stiffer suspension for all the damn potholes. Half the city streets in my area are tore up as bad as dirt roads. (I only half joke about buying the Tacoma in OR configuration just for the god damn city streets I had to drive around on...)

The really cool thing is if you decide you don't want the entire FX4 package, you can get just the locker. That's what I did, went with the 3.55 locker w/out the FX4. I plan on adding 5100s anyway, so the shocks would be replaced, and I had no need for the skid plates or Hill Descent that comes with FX4. That being said, it's a GREAT value for those that want it.

I think that's what confused me so much on build and spec! So many of the things could be added individually instead of via packages that it took time to figure out the cheapest route. I just tried building another Tacoma, and it seemed like it was all or nothing, aside from a few interior or exterior accessories.
