i know a few people have touched on this before, be it oil sprays or the like, but I wondered if there was anyone here who has experience with 3M undercoating like 08881 or the like. Also, where do you recommend putting it for spot protection? I'd rather not just blanket the underneath with a thick black mess.

Don't ! Use an oil or wax base and expect to retreat it every so often. It will harden over time crack and hold moisture in.

it's suppose to be rubberized. The material sprayed on at the factory is done in controlled conditions. If you think you can disassemble the parts you wish to spray, clean the area spotless, rub it down will alcohol and recreat those conditons along with spraying with the precision of a computer and reassembling it, go for it. These areas are also sprayed before assembly. You run the risk of creating voids that will hold moisture and create rust and clog drainage areas. I would never use anything that hardens. Just get some wheel bearing grease and paint it onto areas you want coated with a foam brush. Repeat yearly.

So you are saying they are likely pre-treated at the factory? Others here have said they have seen no signs of any kind of treatment at all.

No I am NOT saying that. I am only talking about the material. I have not mentions Tacoma's at all.....I am simple stating that when it is used by any manufacturer, it is applied in controlled conditions. It's more of a sound proofing material.

The store shelves are filled with "easy spray" products promising to protect your car from rust. The surface needs to be prepared meticulously and the rusting starts once it leaves the factory. Only free flowing oils, wax base and other products that don't harden but do wear off and need repeat application work over time. I have been rust proofing my cars for decades and if this stuff worked, I would have used it years ago.

Once applied, you no longer can inspect the area and reapply any protecting agent and never know where rust is occurring. That's why all these one time rust prevention shops went out of business and are replaced by yearly application shops.

What free flowing, wax base, etc. do you recommend? Looking for specific product recommendations.
