People are starting to freak out about this storm. This is a new thing. 20-30 years ago a hurricane was no worry. Doesn't it seem like people are massive wimps about the weather these days?

No I'm not, YOU ARE!!! :angrygirl:
Yes it does. I know some ice storms have really got some people in recent years but really how much have you heard about damage from a hurricane in NE in a while.

I agree. People seem to be getting extra wimpy with any kind of storm these days. Not to mention the constant hype and coverage from the news before any storm.

I remember one hurricane in the 90's that was really bad and most people just lost roofing shingles and whatnot. Of course the people in Hull or Nantasket where the whole town is 1 foot above sea level got hammered but that is to be expected. I was living in Plymouth MA, doing construction on the Cape and it was great for business. Did a lot of roofs that summer. But otherwise hurricanes are pretty much a non-event here in NE. Yet I have people in my office planning to hit the stores tonight. Media frenzy beginning.

I worked that storm, Sept '85. The eye passed right over, but it fizzled out without a part two.
Sandy did much more damage where I am due to tides and storm surge. Bunch of houses on the beach disappeared.
Tree damage was much worse with Sandy too. Blocked roads, broken poles and wires kept me very busy for weeks.
Made a bunch of $$ and paid my house off too.

This time, I hope it goes away. I'm getting too old and tired for the non stop 16-18+ hr days. After a week of that, you sort of lose track of time.

    You're probably thinking of Bob.
Nobody up here really gets too worried about hurricanes, but people are a lot wussier about snowstorms than I remember from when I was a kid.

    True.
Funny thing, there were far, far, less four wheel drive/AWD vehicles back in the 70's-80's and people figured out how to get around.

That was hurricane Bob I believe back in 85. I remember my cousin attaching a sheet to a painters pole and we used it as a sail on our skateboards. Worked pretty well actually. :D

They're cheap, I think $20. Black stone labs will send you the kit for free, then you pay when you send the oil back to them for analysis.

That's because people now are so dependent on their vehicles doing their driving for them that as soon as they're presented with lousy conditions that the car's computer can't compensate for they panic. Between AWD, Traction Control, ABS, and all of the other computerized nanny systems in cars now people have lost a lot of the basic ability to drive.

Your right... Most people used to run dedicated snow tires, studded too. No more... Also, the tires weren't nearly as wide as they are today. Nothing bugs me more than getting stuck stopped behind my coworkers that earlier in the day said "I got all seasons".

I know, I know, but I needed a half ton.

Irene did a bunch of damage in Vermont a few years back.. Some places still aren't back to normal.

Oof. I could understand 0w-20 on the NA motors, as I'm fairly certain my Mom's new Forester is 0w-20, but man, I couldn't fathom a turbo EJ on 0w-20. See rod, see rod knock. Knock rod, knock.

I just got an email from Blackstone that they jumped the price to $28.00

Morning all. Looks like the weekend might be salvageable with the storm moving out to sea. What do you guys have on tap? I've got to get up on the roof and sweep out the liner for the wood stove. Boiler has to be cleaned & serviced too. I guess on Monday, I'll be coughing up black lung.
