So the truck I put a deposit on was not originally going to have a cover installed when built. Build is scheduled for Oct 15th.

I really need a cover. Should I try to see if the dealer can contact them to add a cover or wait and get aftermarket? Not even sure it's possible to add at this point?

    Thanks!

After seeing one in person I wasn't impressed. There are better applications out there. Waiting on Backflip to update.

If you want the factory cover, better have it added to your order now.

They are almost endless. Canvas, aluminum, plastic or fiberglass. Rolled, folding or retractable. Anywhere from $400-2k.

Was leaning towards a hard foldable cover. I'll need to research materials for weight vs durability.

Hoping for some opinions from those who have the cover to see if I need to try and push to get the factory installed version or if I should just wait and get a better cover.

I have the factory cover on mine...DON'T DO IT!!

    For several reasons...

    It's completely over engineered.
    Heavy as hell
    Have to unbolt to remove
Will never sit completely flat...tailgate will push up rear every time due to weather strip.

You can tell Toyota designed this like the prototype which would open from both ends, but I assume safety concerns won out and they ended up adding the bolt and removing the latch at the last minute. The end result is a heavily engineered piece of shit. This is what happens when government mandates something. Don't feed the beast, if your truck has one ask that it be removed of at the very least make them give it to you. Maybe they will catch on.

That is pretty nice. Not maybe as good for security as some others but, out of sight, out of mind is the best deterrent.

I am one who initially tried to get my dealer to have the OEM cover added to my build but decided against it due to what I was seeing posted by people. I am glad I skipped it.

I actually like my factory cover. It's very easy to use, sturdy, waterproof, looks nice and even though it uses one bolt to attach it a standard 13mm that goes into a bracket on the side of the bed. I removed it in about a minute flat, weighs about 40 pounds.

The factory cover also requires them to cut into your bed caps. Looks very ghetto. Skip it.

Factory cover works for me. Took the truck to a full service wash today and the inside of the bed was dry after the wash.

Yours must seal better than mine. This is just after the current monsoon. Although the manual does say it's not watertight and to "take care when transporting items that may be damaged by water".

The $1K Retrax on my gen2 worked great for years. The only downside was the nearly 1 ft. of bed space consumed by the fixed cover retractor. This is the reason I opted for the factory cover.
