    Somewhere on the forum I read that the manufacturing plant was indicated by a number--I think 5 equaling BC and 3 meaning San Antonio. But on Wikipedia it reads that the manufacturing plant in indicated by the 11th digit and "X" means San Antonio. Can anyone clarify? My VIN is:

    5TFSZ5AN4GX003622

    X is a place holder. Won't be there in the real vin. 5 is Texas built

    Is the Wikipedia reference wrong then?

    OK thanks.

    Didn't mean to make two threads--only meant to edit single thread. Must have done something wrong.

    Dealer e-mailed me that my truck is on the way, so don't know why VIN would continue to be a placeholder. Maybe he's just trying to make me feel that something is actually happening.

    The X is not a placeholder. If the last 6 are numbers without an alpha character then it's a real vin. 3 on front is Baja, 5 on front is San Antonio.

    Yeah. The X in this case is a check digit. It should tell you a formula to find out if it is a real VIN. The easy way is if there is an alpha in the last 6. There's also a value for every character that when added all up comes to a value of a position that is the check digit.

    Edit: also the first character is country of origin. That's why people have been referencing the 5 or 3.

    actually the 1st and 11th digit should match when your talking about Tacoma's only.

    1st digit (country code) :
    3=Mexico
    5=USA

    11th digit (plant code) :
    M= Baja CA, Mexico (TMMBC)
    X= San Antonio, TX, US

    8102 and Jeff Lange like this.
