I have a 2000 Taco TRD Off road with 376,000 miles on it. Looking into buying a newer one.
Would it be a bad ideal to buy a 2006 with 135,000? 17-18k?

With that sort of mileage, you're entering the "Maybe---Maybe Not" zone. It's POSSIBLE that many miles didn't hurt the truck. More'n likely it will be having a few mechanical issues in the near future. If that's all highway miles put on by someone who drives like a grampa, you may only be half way to worn out. If those miles were put on by someone like I was when I was in my 20's, it may be ready for the crusher by now. Need more info.

My current ride will turn over 75,000 on the way to work this morning. I've seen trucks with 7500 miles that have more wear and tear on 'em. That said, my Tacoma is still 5 years old, has 5 year old parts all over it. No matter how well the previous owner took care of it, the clock has still been spinning.

Yeah, need more info than what's given.

    4X4?
    Long bed?
Aftermarket items? i.e. tires, wheels, bumpers, lift kit, light bars ...
Any new parts? ie brakes, ball joints, u-joints, water pump ...
Maintenance records? Proof of transmission flushes (or routine drain/refill), oil changes, radiator flush ...
    Any damage?
    Garaged?
    Free of vibrations?

Kelly blue book shows 16355 for a TRD off road V6 double cab long bed; premium sound; alloy wheels; off road tires; leather seats; fully loaded; roof rack; towing package; ABS; and excellent condition.

That's alot of coin for that truck IMO. Do you know any history on the truck ? How many miles do you average a year ? My buds son bought a used 2007 Tacoma just a year ago and has put almost 34,000 miles on it already and is a full time student ! I asked him how the hell can he afford it ? He replied he uses the Pitch In program, every day/evening him and two or three guys pitch in 5.00 bucks each and cruise around till it's gone. I said so you are basicly spending 20.00 bucks a day on fuel to go nowhere, smh ! Oh to be young.
OP my point is if you only put on 10 or 12 thousand miles a year you could have many years left on it but if you add up miles in rapid fashion find lowwer miles. Who really knows the care this has had in first 130,000 miles. My vote is to much $$ for this truck. Good luck man.

Thanks for the input. He definitely is asking way over the kelley blue book so I think I could talk him down to like 15,500 or so. I haven't gotten a chance to look at it yet. I live 2 hours away from where it is located.

I also found a 2006 with 95,000. Asking 20500 which also seems high. Needs timing belt and water pump so I am sure that it could be talked down as well. I just graduated college and am looking for a reliable one that will last me for awhile. My 376,000 mile tacoma did me well but it is time to move on.

    FS if anyone is interested....

Where are you/truck located? What's the market for used Tacos in your region? If you're in Socal/Southwest it may be high for the year & miles, up here in the Great Lakes used Tacos are hard to find, new ones too for that matter. A truck with those specs in very good condition would be around $20K.

17-18k is even on the high side for an 06 with 135. Not a screaming deal anyway. An 06 with half that mileage would still go for under 20.

Just for comparison, I bought my 05 sport DC with 119k miles for $14,999 at a stealership. Owned by an old guy who drove it back and forth from AZ to NY with documented oil changes every 4500-5000 miles.

I am in Fort Collins CO. Tacoma market is pretty hot around here. The one with 135k has an immaculate carfax with all the maintenance records, TRD, Matching topper. I think I will probably offer 15,500-16,000. @MattScatt28 What are the specs and where are you?

When I bought mine it just made more sense to get a new one. Resale is insane on these puppies.

Drive it first. And crawl underneath to inspect the frame. 2nd gen Tacomas are prone to frame rust - especially if you're in a winter climate where they salt the roads. I haven't been to Fort Collins since I was like 16... not sure if they salt there?

All depends on your budget. I wanted a 2yr old Tacoma. But I found that 2yr Tacomas with 60k on the clock were only $2k to $3k cheaper than brand new. So I went new. With the OP stating he just got out of college he might not be able to float those payments.
