Test drove a sweet new tacoma today, but the offer they gave me on my trade in was insane. I have a 2002 dbl cab TRD 4x4 with 190k. I was already prepared to receive the shaft, but I decided to hear them out on their offer..... $4000.00. I actually laughed out loud when he said 4,000. Needless to say I was out the door within minutes. Just venting and now thinking of keeping my truck that has never had anything wrong except a rusted out exhaust.

When I bought my taco, the dealer offered me $1300 for my 96 4Runner...sold it for just shy of $5k a month later. Trade ins on older vehicles are a joke

your truck would get well over $10k here no problem, that's the shitty thing, trying to find a 01-04 3.4l 4wd ext or dbl cab with low miles and you'll be looking in the $16k-$18k range, insane a decade old truck sells for that much. Cummins 4wd Dodges and Tacomas, hold their value so well it's crazy

I wouldn't say the Cummins are that amazing at holding their value. You can spend over 80k on a new one and get it 3 years later for less than half. Around here anyway.

I just KBB'd your truck, with the little information you provided. Mid-range price level of they truck if you sold private party is 7k. 6k would be a low end poorer condition.

A dealer would sell your truck for 9k on the top end. However, I noticed your truck is not eligible for being a certified pre-owned vehicle, according to KBB.com. This would be a negative impact on the dealers potential to sell and your potential to get a good trade in offer.

If they offered you 4k, I think that's a reasonable offer, I mean, they have to make some money. Usually, whatever they offer will be double what they sell it for. So they might get 4k when its all said and done anyway. The benefit of the trade in is, they take care of all the paperwork and hassle. I think for some, this a plus factor. But if your hard up for the extra 2-3k you might make private party, then go get 'em!

I traded in a 1979 Ford f100 short bed 2 wheel drive on my 2014 DCSB Sport, they gave me $3000. We had already made a deal on the 2014 when I mentioned trading the Ford they said bring it buy and they would make me an offer, I was pleased. This was a nice truck but not a restored truck.

I have a 4x4 Cummins that I bought less than a year ago and it was the Laramie Longhorn Edition which is the top and it was $65K. Every option but air bags. Bought a Taco to keep the miles down on it. KBB is no help on Taco's around here.

High 80's here in Canada. I just did a quick search and found some 2011 3500 crew cab diesel Laramie's for low 30's. Nice shape, shiny 5th wheel haulers.

I just don't think they compare to Tacomas for holding their value straight off-the-lot.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I'd keep your 02, the first gen double cabs are getting harder and harder to find being that they were only made 4 years and are a unique breed of Tacoma. Not to mention, you will miss the build quality of it almost instantly. The build quality of Toyota vehicles has been steadily declining year by year. I bought my previous 2011 Taco brand new and by 20k miles it had developed a host of interior rattles. My 04 DC is pushing 100k, is 11 years old and has ZERO interior rattles. And she gets driven up and down rough roads frequently. 2nd and 3rd gen trucks are still quality vehicles and reliable as hell, I just don't believe they are built as well as the old ones were from my personal experiences. I have yet to see a 3rd gen in person yet, but the interior looks cheaply made in pictures, even more so than my 2011's interior was.
Only real downfall to our trucks is having a timing belt and the rusty frame issue which is a problem for all Tacomas. Even the new 2016's are likely to start having the same problems in about 5 years. I had a 2014 Ram with only 38k miles come through the shop today from NY state and the undercarriage of that truck looked awful. It doesn't take long at all for frames to go quickly in salty states. Rams aren't known for having frame rot issues as bad as Tacomas, but imagine a new Taco from that area with about that amount of miles on it by now. Yikes!

If it makes you feel better I wouldn't pay $4k for a 14 year old truck with almost 200k miles.

    Well
I don't remember anybody saying straight off the lot, the op's talking about his 04 Tacoma, that's what I referred to as holding its value, his 04 Tacoma, and how Cummins turbo diesels hold their value, I didn't hear anyone stipulating something straight off a lot.

My buddy just paid $30k for an 06 dodge Cummins base model 4wd ext cab 6 speed manual, for those that know dodge tbd's that's a desirable truck, no crap automatic transmission.

When you're looking at a 98 Cummins with 200k miles they still want $17k, that's holding its value.

Those same trucks with no tbd can be had for half that. Compare a power stroke Ford, thousands less than a Cummins

    Around here anyway

And for those that keep saying kbb, that may apply to trade in for crook car dealers, but insurance and resale is valued by a vehicles value in a marketplace, what someone will pay for it, and it's documented in the NADA price guide, every bank has access to this so they can figure what a vehicle is really worth for loans. That truck, an 01-04 dbl cab TRD 4wd with around 200k miles would still easily fetch in the teens in the marketplace I live in, that's why as many suggested, don't bother with a trade in, sell it privately if you want to get a fair price for it
