I have no idea what I'm doing regarding audio

Ok so I have a pioneer single din HU and recently when trying to play music via my iPhone 5s through the provided USB port the sound gets way too unrecognizable - meaning the speakers sound like constant screeching and like a dying cheetah and you can't distinguish any clear music.
The odd thing is the radio itself works and sounds fine, even playing music from the same device through the provided AUX port, so it can't be my speakers.

Where should I start and what to look for? Is this a contact issue, wire issue?

Here's the stupid POS (disregard the error 19 as its not the issue, unless you know how to get me to fix that too lol)

 

what's your head unit's model number? i know some pioneer head units allow you to adjust the loudness of digital inputs. it sounds like the input to your head unit is distorting.

 

I can get it later, at work. But it's had its own custom preset on the EQ for a long time - this was out of nowhere and hasn't gotten any better. I'm thinking something regarding the USB port is out of whack

 

Does the hu have Bluetooth?

 

No, no Bluetooth.

 

Easiest fix is buy a new head unit. No reason not to have hd radio, and Bluetooth streaming.

 

Yea if it started out of nowhere then most likely something broke (either software or hardware). Is there any way to reflash the firmware or upload a software update?

 

Check the wiring coming off the radio wiring harness... Maybe the tape that gets put on the ends of unused wires has fallen off and grounded against metal?

 

Not for these models I'm pretty sure there's no software updates.

Thats something I figured since I can still listen to music through the AUX but not the USB interface.
Anyone know the easiest way to take the HU out?

 

Eh, on this truck you need to remove the dashboard trim that's part of the radio mounting kit. Then unscrew the 4 10mm bolts that hold the radio mount in place. Then remove the radio along with the aftermarket mount.

Normally the radio trim can be removed by hand, then radio itself can be slid out of its sleeve that's secured to the aftermarket mount. But the cabling behind the radio is a bit crowded and busy, so it's better to just remove the whole assembly.

 

Can someone recommend one of these speakers over the other? Both are coaxial 6x8

So I'm looking to get a double din HU I prefer to have an option for a backup/front camera monitor, equalizer, preferably USB ports, Bluetooth, and maybe AUX. A lot of these things look the same and are a couple hundred bucks
Any recommendations on which to buy?

So I replaced the what I thought were stock speakers, ended up being POS pioneers, to these JBL GXs. They sound way clearer.

So now here's my issue - I noticed the front driver speaker will occasionally cut out (it started doing that with the previous speakers too recently which is why I switched them)
Is this a wiring issue, I breifed over any visible wires when I replaced these and note I used all existing wires; or is this a head unit problem?

Does the "screeching" sound like a whine? Does it vary depending on whether you are accelerating or not?

With the speakers cutting out and the "screeching," I would be on the wiring harness being loose or improperly connected. The "screeching" is probably a bad ground.

The area behind the dash on those model years are notorious for sharp edges eating through wires and causing shorts.

For what it's worth, it really isn't a big deal to run new speaker wire to each door if you need to!

Its pretty random, I haven't really narrowed it down to accelerating cause one drive the speakers are ok the next or so drive it'll do it.
That sounds feasible to me that it could be a bad ground. I'm not too sure what wires I would be replacing and what kind of wire to use/where to buy it?
