I say yes and no. I'm using the Ryno-offroad skids and have beat there ever living shit out of them. I have bent all 3 in some manner and even stress cracked the steel on tcase skid. That being said they have seemed to have taken their final resting shape. All in all its not going to hurt, if your your running the bud builts or similar then the answer is definitely yes.

Skid row doesn't use a cross member either. That being said its bent up to the point where it's touching the t case slightly but I plan on smashing it back out and welding some supports to it. I don't think I'll need much than that and I really beat on mine a lot.

I built all my skids, IFS 1/4", mid 1/4" and the transfer case skid was 3/16" but I bent it to where I blew a 2 inch hole in the exhaust, so I rebuilt it to 1/4" with braces, and its only kind bent after using it as a kickstand and pivot point a bunch. the guy who said 1/8" is plenty has no idea what he is talking about

 1/4 for each skid? How much does all that weigh?

Yeah I feel like on a manual taco a strong t case skid is the most important. 1/4 on IFS seems overkill since it's got three really good mounting/support points. Though I would be nervous if my IFS skid didn't mount up to the front crossmember like a bunch of others don't.

If you wheel it a lot 1/4 skids would be nice. My 3/16 skids are tweaked so damn much it's crazy. Would much rather have the thicker skids than the weight savings.

My 3/16 IFS skid weighs around 70 pounds. I couldn't imagine what 1/4 would be like

Who cares what it weighs if you would rather your truck be protected?, last time I checked diffs and transmissions cost a lot more than a couple pieces of steel. You should see the transfer case skid for a first gen taco that trail gear makes for SAS trucks, it's 3/8". Plus the wieght is real low in the moment center of the truck which helps keep er planted, less than 200 pounds for all the skids.

Mine only wraps up the front lip a few inches, it doesn't go to that front most crossmember, but a 1/4" aluminum plate does and it ties to the bumper, it's my wieght savings lol

Ok so I've been thinking about finally designing my tcase skid. What size square tube should I use for the crossmembers? I'm thinking of adding 2 crossmembers, one right before the case and one right after then filling it with 1/8" plate. I'm trying to make this as light as possible since my truck already struggles going over mountain passes above 6000ft. Think 1 1/4"square tube will work?

How thick of tube are you talking about? .25 wall would probably work, thinner than that and I'd have my doubts.

If you are going to run two crossmembers (in close proximity to each other) then that should be sufficient
