So. It's a Monday alright. Just walked out to my truck to get a flashlight. That's when I notice oil dripping off the right side LCA. Upon closer examination, I find oil dripping from the LEFT LCA. Not one, but TWO blown shocks. Looks like the Toytech Boss front lift that I wasn't thrilled with is about to become a boat anchor. Time for something else. Damn. There goes this weeks paycheck.

Doubtful. It was originally purchased in 2011. It was still in the box in the back seat of my truck when I bought it 10 months ago. I've not been happy with the front shocks since I installed 'em. The compression dampening is WAY too stiff and rebound is way too fast. Then the seals go out. I don't know if their laying in a box for 4 years had anything to do with any of this or not. No one else I talk to has the same complaints with this kit. Gonna stick my stock shocks back on until I get something else. Gotta drive it every day so I can't be down while waiting for new shocks.

Wow was thinking of getting some. Do these suck or is it just a fluke?

In my case, they suck. However, this kit has a loyal following and has sold in huge numbers. I'm wondering if I just got a bad pair. What's really odd is, since the install, I had the preload set for a 3" lift. Just this past Friday, I backed 'em down to a 2"+ lift. With less preload, the seals blow. That seems counter-intuitive to what I would expect.

I might give 'em a call at some point. First priority is to get 'em off the truck so I can drive to work tomorrow. I've still got my stock struts and a top plate spacer kit laying on the work bench. That's going on tonight so I can stay mobile. Then I'll decide what is next. From back in my dirt bike days, I've got a bit of a connection with Fox.....and a desire to do something EXPENSIVE! Who knows.

At some point, I'd like to get the Toytech's taken care of so I could sell 'em to recover some of what I sense I'm about to drain from my wallet.

    Toyota's are awesome
I'll be out of the office for the next couple days but give me a call after Wednesday and we will see what we can do for you.

If you pull them off before I get a chance to talk to you, snap a couple pictures of them installed and record a measurement from center of the hub up to the fender edge.

    Thanks!
    Dylan

Having the shocks sit for so long probably dried/shrank the seals. And it sounds like ToyTec is stepping up

I've already got 'em off. Did so as soon as I got home @ 2PM (eastern time) I re-installed my OEM shocks/coils with a top plate spacer that I took off a truck I worked on a couple weeks ago. This is my daily driver and I had to get it roadworthy before tomorrow morning.

Somewhere I have those measurements written down from when I installed the lift 2-1/2 months ago. For some reason, I never did think these shocks were quite right. The Boss kit is too popular and too widely used and has too good of a reputation to be like what I experienced with them. They were "OK" when first installed, but lost a lot of the compression dampening early on, then the rebound went away in the last few days. I used the word "ricochet" to describe them in recent days. It seemed particularly odd that they both blew out at the same time. What I do remember is the lift raised the front end 3-1/8" from what it was (with stock suspension) And I used a 1/2" poly spacer on the drivers side to get the front level side to side.

One thing that keeps running through my mind.....I just installed Goodyear Duratracs (265/75/r16's, removed Yokohama Geolanders, same size) When I first put the Duratracs on, I tried to run them @ 30psi. It didn't take long to figure out that was WAY too soft. In the last few days I pumped them up to 38psi. THey are quite a bit more "solid" and don't absorb bumps like they did @ 30psi. Now the suspension is doing all the work.

As I mentioned, the kit was still in the box when I got it, but the trucks original owner bought it in November of 2011 from what I was told. I'm working with second hand info. From what I was told, they spent the last 4 years under his workbench.

I'll give you a call in a couple days.
