I know that's what was said on ESPN but that doesn't make any sense really, pick up the flag because the result is the same? BS... throw the flag and sort it out.

 

Wasn't it not called because the ball was rolling in that direction already?

 

Perhaps it wasn't called because batting it out and falling on it in the endzone are both intent to cause a touchback?..

Not sure of this, I too was curious when I saw the play.

 

Yeah I picked up on that too. But I guess with the offense doing it, the safety is the penalty and the flag is picked up.
I feel like the NFL has all these old obscure rules... I'm sure they were put there in place for a reason but it seems like some of them never come up and get forgotten about until someone looses a game.
Reminds me of the crazy laws some of the states have that are completely obsolete... Like it being illegal to borrow your neighbors vacuum in Colorado

 

I don't understand how no one knows about the illegal batting rule. It was my first thought when I saw him hit it.

Did you just hear that on ESPN? Gerry Austin just said they wouldn't have thrown the flag, the ball was heading out anyway no need to swing the game on a call like that. Wow! Dilfer and Young agreed.

Arguably, he touched the ball with his palm... not necessarily a batting.

I know about the batting rule, I think most people do, it's a common penalty. I am talking about that specific situation. Neither the offense nor the defense can "batt" the ball in any direction the end zone. I didn't know it applied like that. (ignored all the time when the offense does it)

 

It's not even questionable that he batted that ball out. He only went for the ball with one hand. If he were attempting to recover the fumble he would have used two hands. Anyone who says the ball was heading out of bounds before Wright touched it clearly doesn't understand how a football rolls and can bounce. Here's a hint: footballs aren't spherical. There's no way to know if that ball would have bounced out had Wright not touched it.

 

That's because the options are touchback or loss of yards and the batting team retains possession.

 

So throw the flag in some situations but not other? Isn't it a safety if the offense does it? No, the batting team doesn't retain possession... the last team to possess it does.

 

Yes, it's a safety if it's batted out of the endzone of the team that has posession. That's what happened in the 2003 AFC championship game. The ball was snapped over Smith's head and he kicked it out the back of his own endzone to prevent NE from recovering it. The Patriots had the option to either take two points and a free kick or let the Colts replay 4th down with a loss of yards. The refs probably aren't calling it because in this situation the defense will always take the safety.

 

That's where the argument breaks down imo, do you know how many penalties get called in a situation where declined is automatic? Maybe if they called it every time without fail you wouldn't have two hall of famers on live TV saying they didn't know about the rule.

 

Yea technically speaking though, if you go with the rule book the flag should have been thrown and Detroit should have had the ball on the 1 yard line... but this shit happens, there were like 3 bad calls/no calls in the playoffs last year that resulted in a team winning at the end of the game.
