Yakima rack noise: fairing?

Put Qtowers and 66" bars on my 05 double cab. Noise is intolerable at even 30mph. Anyone have success/experience with Yakima fairing to reduce noise?

 

How often do you use them?
I take mine off, why pay the penalty for drag, noise, if they're not in use?

 

I used to have the Yakima roof rack a couple years ago but I always had the fairing on it and never tried it without the fairing. But even with the fairing I remember it was still pretty noisy at highway speeds.

 

My mounted Thule Rack with a fairing has been on the truck since I bought my 4WD DC in 2007 & don't hear any noise from the rack.
My towers at first whistled so I placed a piece of black electric tape over where the lock blank is (no locks are installed) to stop that. Thats been it over the past 4 yrs.

Last night I tracked my mpg on a 100 mile ride to get my new enclosed trailer & it was 19 so I do not think it effects my mileage that bad either. It was pretty windy with gusts up to 30. No noise from the rack. MPG towing on the way home with the trailer it was a different story.

I would recommend getting a fairing.

 

I have yakima setup with faring and have very little noise at 70+mph. I only have surf pads on right now but with snowboard racks it was noisier but still didnt bother me. A friend has same setup (-) faring and his is noisy with snowboard racks. Are they snug? Are they seperated to spec? You got pretty long crossbars, could that be part of problem? I would definitely recommend faring. Cheap (ish) fix for wind noise and looks nice. Or do what I always do and turn up the stereo!

 

I've never had Qtowers before. They were a pain to get adjusted the first time. If I can just clip them on and go, then no problem.

 

I tried the wind jammer, it sucked for the Tacoma, windshield angle and first bar being only 6" didn't give it much time to work. Got the fairing and the noise is gone, got it new from auto anything for $55.20 shipped. I also had 66" bars but cut them down to 54".

 

Racks can be like a kazoo

 

I just put thule racks on and have zero wind noise, been up to 70mph and done 500km's with them on. Wierd

 

Anyone else got input on the yakima wind fairing vs wind jammer. I'm looking to get one this week before heading out with the new kayak but not sure which one. Leaning towards the fairing.

 

Fairing works for sure. Improved MPG on my car also.

They're stupidly expensive. But yeah, on my xB the bare rack knocked off 2 MPG. Fairing gave 1 back, and best of all killed the annoying whistle.

 

What size do you recommend couldn't find anything online for sizing chart. Ya it's crazy loud I tested it today on the drive to work. Hour plus. Good thing I juat put a loud system in was driving me nuts

 

Dunno. My bars were not extended length, so my fairing was pretty much the same width as my roof was.

I'd assume you'd want the same width, whatever the truck width is - or as close to it as you can.
