You guys are killing me with your mpg estimates based on such short trip distances.

True. I'll post this again when it's empty, but this is a dramatic improvement. The only difference was 91 octane fuel. I had to fill up this morning and figured I would see if if it has any bearing on the gas mileage. I've seen several claiming it doesn't matter. ...think it might. This was driving around town today on and off the highway.

Stay tuned, I also setup a fuelly account so I can account for more long term results.

Running higher octane shouldn't make a difference provided the engine is tuned/designed to run at 87 anyway. You are not gaining any power from it or torque or anything. Just losing $$.

I know this. I have known this. And I STILL tested just to make sure. It averages out the same. Any uptick is a fluke/will measure out over time :-/

Generally, I would agree with you. Buy this is a pretty significant jump from my first two tanks of gas. I don't suspect tuning is as static as it has been in the past.

a lot of stations sell gasoline without ethanol at the high grades. This is the only way that you will get better gas mileage with a higher grade of gasoline.

This brings up an excellent question....is EPA standard testing done with gas that has any ethanol in it?

I always reset the trip computer right before I do a highway only trip to get a good gauge of highway MPG. I have always gotten EPA estimates or better. I live at 6,000 ft and regularly drive over a 9,000 foot pass too. Sometimes I will burn a whole tank of only city driving without leaving town and I will let that be my city MPG estimate. Any city mixed with highway driving is gonna totally distort your MPG numbers because of the varying amount of city/highway.

It's a button you press so you can drop the balls on your taco :D

JK. It's a button you press that maps out the transmission shift points to keep your engine closer to the power band.

Like people said before, it's like turning traction control off for your engine.

    5. When I buy gas at the pump, it typically contains about 10% ethanol and other additives. Does EPA use a gasoline-ethanol blend for fuel economy testing?
No, EPA’s test fuel does not currently contain any ethanol or other oxygenates. However, EPA does account for the impact of low-level ethanol blends in our fuel economy estimates. Ethanol has a lower energy density than gasoline—about 1/3 less energy per gallon. That means a car operating on 10% ethanol would require about 3% more fuel to travel one mile than a car operating on gasoline and thus have about 3% lower fuel economy. EPA currently reduces all fuel economy test values by about 10% to account for ethanol in gasoline and other factors such as wind, hills, and road conditions.

Somewhere else in one of the test procedures they talk about using gasoline that has a standardized energy density.

Ok, so just did my first fill up. I averaged 20mpg at around 95% city driving around town. Now, on this new tank, I'm averaging 22.3 at 100% city (and hitting almost every light red). I'm amazed at how great the mileage is on these. And I'm not even close to broken in yet.

They should have to use E10 to test. It's such crap. My 4th Gen 4Runner gets 10% better fuel economy on E0, not 3% like they suggest. When I'm up in NC, I fill it up with ethanol free. Around Atlanta it's always E10.

Only 350 miles so far but I'm at 21 mpg, mostly around town.

Just went to see if the tonneau cover is as bad as some have said (it's pretty bad--not getting it) and was offered a test drive in a TRDOR DCSB Auto with tonneau and some heavy tube steps.
Used the touch display eco mpg graph thing where it appears to give average mpg for each one of the last 15 miles. At lower speeds it is pretty good; had three miles in a row pegged at the 30mpg limit. Going 65mph it was only giving about 20mpg. Not windy, really flat, coming and going, 30-31 psi, ECT norm, A/C off didn't seem to help.
WTF? My 3.4, same config, gets about 23 at 65 (won't hit 30 at any speed). I expected like 26 @ 65; not even close.

    Edit: both 4WD.
