ive been reading the forums for a few days now, just never posted.
it is time now for me to pop my first cherry post.
so if i posted this in the wrong section, mods.. please relocate to a proper forum and take my appologies.

i have a 2008 Acura TL Type S 6MT as my main squeeze right now (DD). and looking for a good reliable truck to take for snowboarding trips for the coming and years to come winter seasons, i also have an 07 Honda 600RR bike that i would like to throw on the back of a truck and go somewhere fun to ride other than uber flat south jersey. planning to get a jet ski for next summer so im gonna need a truck to haul that also... and the TL cant do any of the above. even though the TL has more than enough hp and trq to do all this. snowboards dont fit (rack is out of the option) the frame/chassis of the car just isnt meant to tow anything and theres no hook up for me to add a hitch even if i wanted to, and the trunk isnt big enough to hold the motorcycle... so i need a truck. probably start using this truck also as my Daily driver even though its worse on gas than the TL.

im looking to spend around 5-8k for a used Tacoma. 1st gen.
i pretty much know the differences in the truck but i still have a few questions... so here goes. dont flame too hard.

    1: Which model Taco's come wit a 2.4 and which come with a 2.7? SR5 i know is the V6.
2: TRD offroad package with the E-Lockers only comes in a quad cab? not in Xtra cabs? or even Regular Cabs?
3: does the TRD offroad package with E-Lockers come in a Manual Transmission? or Automatic Only?
4: does any SR5 come in a manual transmission?

i do not want a 2x4 nor a prerunner either

last of all im looking at this Taco, and i know the E-Locker switch/button is next to the cigarette lighter ports. the gentleman claims it has the TRD offroad package, got the TRD sticker on the rear corner on each side of the bed... but when you look at the interior pics. there is no E-Differential Locker button/switch there... whats with that?

The button is there...it's not by the cig lighter it's on the left by the steering wheel tilt lever. More behind it actually.

From what I know. Mine is a 2.7L 4x4 Xcab, and it is an SR5. So the SR5 is not only the v6 it's just an upgrade package name really.

The TRD packages come on the Xcab, quad cab, and regular cab.

SR5's are either Auto's or Manuals... They aren't designated to any exact models.

IF there is no locker switch anywhere, it is a fake. Also another way to check from what I have read, the TRD models have Bilstein shocks, UNLESS someone has upgraded.

I am sure more of the guys will give you more info on this.

it appears the locker switch is there in this pic

    IIRC

    2.4l come in whats considered the minis...or 5luggers...and the 2.7 came in the 6luggers i believe...either 4x4 or prerunner

you can get the elocker in single, xcab, or dcab

you can get the locker in both man and auto

sr5 is a trim line and can be man or auto as well

Yes SR5 comes in manual. SR5 simply means the trim package which includes power windows, power locks, seat material, etc. In the past (80's) it stood for Sports Rally 5 speed (5 speed manual trans).

I got screwed then, mine is a true SR5, but no power windows... Everything but power windows.

1: sr5 package as I know it is just your power locks/windows and is available with a 4cyl.
2: TRD package IS available in an ext cab. I have it. I'm not sure about a regular cab
3: My standard has an E-locker, Also check out the clutch start cancel button. This is awesome in offroading situations. Or when you want to reach through the window to start your truck.
4: As said before sr5 is jujst a package and does come with manual or auto tranny.

e-locker button is the red one next to the dimmer switch. Just to the left of the steering column. This truck does have it. Another way to check for a trd package is to look at the front and rear shocks. TRD packages have the yellow bilstien shocks. I do not believe any other package has them.

Everything is so screwed up now, that it's hard to tell if your getting all the things your supposed to in a package. Before when a truck had a package on it that was that. Nowadays (last 10 years or so) you can order a package but leave out somethings the package includes, thus making it very difficult for second buyers to really know what they are getting.

You didn't get screrwed, I had the SR5 package on my '99 Xtra cab PreRunner, didn't have power anything except steering and brakes. Had manual locks and windows and I bought the truck new from the $tealer. I think the SR5 package has changed over the years. Hopefully Randy (EnolaGaia) will shed some light on what was/wasn't included in this package. Randy is THE guru of the 1st gen Tacos.

I have an '01 Extended Cab, 5spd Manual, 4x4. It is badged as an SR5 and a TRD.

I do not have power windows, locks or mirrors.
I do not have a LSD
I do not have an E-locker. ( Wish I did.)

I bought the vehicle used and called the dealer with the VIN where it was originally purchased, talked to a guy in the service dept who ran the VIN and said it really did come with the SR5/TRD package. Since new, it has had a Rough Country 3 inch body lift ( on there when I bought it) and a RoughCountry 2.5" suspension lift ( also on there when I bought it).

wanted to chime in so you got an idea of how many different configurations there are from the factory.

If you have the TRD package then I think you should have the rear locker.... someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

2.4s only come in 2X4. They don't put it in Pre Runners either, so all 2.4s are low to the ground

No ... The e-locker was not available on 4-cylinder automatics - either with the TRD Off Road Package or as a separate option.

No SR5 option package included power windows or locks from 1995.5 through 2004.

Power windows and locks were available in a separate 'Power Package' (commonly found on SR5's, but not part of the SR5 package).

The 2001 - 2004 Limited Package also included power windows / locks. During that period these Limited Package Tacomas were the only ones that had factory power windows / locks without the Power Package.

As mentioned earlier, power windows / locks / mirrors were not part of any 2001 SR5 package. So yours is 'normal' - it just doesn't have the Power Package.

No pre-2005 Tacoma ever came from the factory with an LSD.

The fact that you don't have an e-locker is a bit strange. A 4X4 XtraCab manual would have had the e-locker included in the TRD Off Road Package. If it really had the TRD package, the only way it sold new without the e-locker would have been if there'd been a special build order deleting the e-locker (very hard to do except maybe on fleet vehicles)

Another possible explanation is that a prior owner removed it. If this were the case there should be signs of the dash button having once been there.

The other possibility, of course, is that a prior owner simply threw some TRD badges on it. This happened a lot ...

There's no way to tell from the VIN whether a pre-2005 Tacoma had either the SR5 or TRD packages on it. The only record that would definitely prove the inclusion of these options would be the build / sales records, and I'm not sure those are accessible except by checking the sales files at the dealership or checking the build sheet.
