Get the H1N1 vaccine = Possible negative side effects + Can still catch H1N1.

Catch the H1N1 flu = Your body will NATURALLY create the antibodies to fight off the flu and you will always have the antibodies for the next time your'e exposed to the H1N1. (I believe)

I haven't had a flu shot in Years! I'll get sick maybe 4 times a year AT MOST and it's usually minor (3-4 days max). I believe it's better to expose your body and condition it to be able to fight anything on it's own without medication. If i have a headache or hungover (Ganja cures that). If i'm sick i try not to take medication unless it's REALLY bad.

I agree that pharma companies charge too much for some medicications. I work for Pfizer here in San Diego (I'm only the shipper). Working here, i've realized how much time and money is put into researching and creating medications. I regularly ship out research compounds in stage I, II, and III of the process and let me tell you, The shit i ship out is EXPENSIVE. If a medicine successfully hits the market, I'm sure they get huge amounts of profit but I've seen how much time, effort and money is put into the process and i can sort of agree to why they charge so much....

I obviously don't like it because i have to pay for the medication just like everybody else. just a thought...

Even if doctors don't get money from pharm companies.....
Patient A sees Dr. X to get flu shot
Patient A is charged $60-80 for visit, of which he pays $15 (copay)
Dr. X gives flu shot from Pharm B at cost of $10 (copay) of which he bills insurance $50
Patient A has side effects or gets cold
Patient A visits Dr. X (another $60 visit) and is prescribed medication from Pharm B
Patient A will have check-up in 2 weeks (another $60 visit)

Dr. X makes money on both Patient A and Patient A's insurance company.
Pharm B makes money on flu shot and possible medication due to side effects or resulting cold.

    What am I missing?

so they can invent new diseases so they can sell people a maintenance drug to alleviate the symptoms? restless leg syndrome? c'mon! why do they never seem to cure anything anymore?

first of all, you don't have to go to a Dr. Office to get the flu shot. You can get it at grocery store pharmacies and FREE govt. Health units.

Secondly, no matter what a Dr. Bills an insurance company, they only get reimbursed a fraction of it.

Third, do you expect healthcare should be free?? What's wrong with doctors getting a paycheck?

They don't invent diseased. RLS and other things are "invented" by our weakening population. Pharm companies invent drugs to cure them because it is profitable. Just like companies making lift kits for tacos...it's profitable for them to do so

i just happen to think its wrong to bill someone 10x what it costs because they know insurance companies negotiate down. so doctors charge way more than it should so that they can get the most possible money from the ins. co. it kinda screws people that don't have insurance.

Example: I tore my knee up pretty bad playing college soccer. the drs and rehab places knew the schools insurance was primary and mine was secondary. So, when all was said and done, the total they billed insurance for was ~$70,000. I tore my other knee a few years later and was on my own insurance and it was through a student health plan. for the same surgery and rehab the total they billed insurance was ~$7,200. So when Drs know who is fitting the bill, they charge based on the ins. coverage, not the work done.
What if, when you bought your truck, they told you MSRP was $85,000 because they knew you were going to haggle down to around $28,000 because you are a good haggler. And Grandma X walks into the same dealership and they tell her they're going to give her a great deal and only charge her $70,000 for the truck. Is that fair?

I'm all for Dr.s getting paid, but just because you went to medical school doesn't mean you can extort people and insurance companies.

Just because they billed 70k doesn't mean they received 70k. Besides, its no different in any other industry. Do you think it costs the oil companies $3/gallon to produce gasoline? Do you think it costs Budweiser $15 to produce a 12 pack? Of course it doesnt. But they have no problem charging the consumer that amount.

Edit: For a surgery the surgeon doesn't collect on the entire bill anyway. Anesthesia gets their cut, the hospital/surgery center gets their cut, the radiologist gets his cut for the scans shot during the procedure, the OR staff has to get paid. You may want to recheck your numbers, I have a hard time believing that your surgery only cost 7k the second time around.

Its not from the flu shot they are dead vaccines and CANNOT make you sick. Now the nasal on the other had is a live vaccine but like I have said before I have seen hundreds of people get it and the only real complaint was some congestion the next morning that went away as the day went on.

Thank you Lord. Finally someone who sounds like they know what they are talking about. I think its funny that people think a $60 dollar office visit is outrageous. You are paying for an expert opinion in area of which you usually know nothing about. This is why it takes 4 years of college (not cheap), 4 years of med school (definitely not cheap) and in my case 5 years of residency plus 1 year of fellowship (making on average $5 dollars per hour) before you start practing on your own.
If you went to a lawyer for the same amount of time they would charge you $300. And guess what? you would have to pay the whole damn thing.
Our reimbursement sucks, despite what president d-bag says. We get about 15% of what we bill. If I was in my job to make real money I would have a been a banker or investor.

My housemate has it. I'm thinking I might go get it because I am taking a trip next week and don't want to get sick before it.
