Why pick 2016 Tacoma DCLB over F150 DC (supercrew)

I know about Toyota resale. Our 4th Gen 4Runner Limited was purchased used for $23,000. Six years and 75k miles later, I sold it for $17,000. Now the wife drives an Odyssey

Our 2012 F-150 (SuperCrew, 4x4, 3.5L EcoBoost) was purchased new for ~$36,000 OTD. KBB has private party value at $32,400. F-150's hold their value pretty darn well, too.

 

It's closer to 2K when I did the math at 3 years, and under 1K at 5 years.

 

Much closer then I would have thought thats for sure.

 

I don't know what's holding me back from going f150 over Tacoma long bed. Maybe its the reliability and resale value I've witnessed in owning 3 Toyotas over the past 11 years. And my terrible experience with a Ford Explorer.

I'm the perfect candidate for f150. A 4 yr old and one on the way.

It Wouldn't be the main family car (we have a rav4 that my wife loves). I won't have the whole family in my car all the time. Just beach outings, camping trips, and runs to the hockey rink.

Tacoma wins in my mind for looks, rep, and the fact that it's just big enough for my needs. Also, I plan to keep this beyond 10 years. I'm not the need a new car every five years type.

 

When I go to Fords website and use the build your own, there are endless configurations. Reason I didnt even bother look at F150 was because I was under the impression that inorder to get a decently configured truck I would need to spend 40K+ easily when all is said and done. Now I know!

 

If I had to do-over, I'd purchase the F150 3.5 ecoboost and reflash the ecu for moar power for less than $600 vs the trd supercharger. You guys need to get over the reliability issues of the past. Ford has done a tremendous job at improving quality since Alan Mulally took over.

I'm still waiting for @Jaybez to come back and tell us we are all liars for figuring out the F150 and Tacoma are now within, at most, a couple of K of each other .

 

Make sure you trucar and check out the F150 forums. I also check our company fleet pricing, which is basically invoice +1, so if you have that option use it. Then you can get the F150 for the prices people have thrown out on here.

 

If you want to order, your ordering dealer can lock the rebates so they stay available when your truck arrives, and if any additional rebates appear you get those, too. We ordered my Father-in-law a 2015 Lariat.

Lariat, SuperCrew, 4x4, 501A, heated/cooled seats, panaromic glass moonroof, naviation, 3.5L Ecoboost, Max Tow Package, Chrome Package, Ruby Red paint, tailgate step.

It was $42,800 + $699 doc + $100 title fee + tax. Sticker $53k and change, IIRC. Took about 6 weeks from order date to arrival and that was with the plants shut down for a week during the 4th of July closure.

Ordering through my local dealer was cheaper than he could find on any lot around him (Asheville, NC area).

Yeah, glad you got your truck quick. When we bought they were still fighting the backlog from the frame backlog, production issues using that much ultra strength steel meant slower production than anticipated, so it was either find something on lot we liked or wait up to three months for an order .

What was pretty amazing was that Ford placed personal and Lariat orders over fleet XL and base XLT orders. They wanted to have enough trucks on lot to not look empty but our company waited nearly 3 months for a white XLT back in February.

 

Hi folks. I'm a current owner of a 2010 Ford F-150 Super Crew XLT 4X4 that I bought brand new in December of 2009. I live one mile from where I work and currently have 19,000 miles on the truck. At 13,000 miles, I had a major engine problem (variable timing system) which was fixed under warranty. In August of this year, I had the same problem reoccur, this time out of warranty. The dealership told me that I had catostrophic engine failure with no compression in two cylinders. I have been battling with the dealership and to replace the engine which I think will happen. The engine problems were not caused by me. I never did any towing, off roading or abuse of the truck whatsoever. My friends called it an old lady truck because it was babied do much and didn't do truck stuff.

I am planning to buy a Tacoma as soon as I get the F-150 back from the dealer. Read the reviews and do your homework. The Tacoma is a much more solid and reliable vehicle. Unless you like replacing engines at 19,000 miles!

 

Ours came from Dearborn. I had heard the frames impacted KC more. Not sure if that's true, though. My dealer also put it in as Priority 10 as shown on our DORA, but somehow the factory pushed it to 01. All we could think was that was his 5th F-Series purchase since 2006 (landscaping company).

 

Is it the 5.4 L engine? They were bad for the odd one having VVT issues. Believe it or not some guys solved it by running higher weight oil, but I'd avoid that if there is any chance Ford will replace it on warranty. Too bad to hear about your experience. This happened on one of our work fleet trucks too but at nearly 200K. It's still running with 5w-40 in it .

I have the 4.6 liter V8 in my F-150. Never knew it but this cam phaser/variable timing thing is fairly common. So much so, there is a Facebook page for unhappy F-150 owner with cam phaser issue.

 

Huh, honestly we never owned a 4.6 L since 2007 at work. At that point I wasn't in the position I'm in but we didn't have any issues that I knew of.

I know on the 5.4 L the issue was caused by short trips not burning off the water from combustion that makes it's way into the oil. The channeling to move the oil through the VVT system was to tight and sludge created by that water could block up the system with insanely bad results. For whatever reason, the heavier weight oil would clean this up and allow the VVT to function properly again. I wonder if they are related problems.

In either case, the 5.4 L and 4.6 L used an older unrelated style of VVT to the 3.5 L and 5.0 L. There is a reason those two motors have the same sort of block as their predecessors but an all new design up top. I haven't heard or seen any issues related to the VVT on those engines.

 

Not an issue I would expect to see in the Tacoma...

 

No, on the same year Tacoma you could expect driveline shudders, axle wrap, fan motor issues, frame rust, etc etc. Believe me, no one is perfect.

Don't get me wrong. I love my Tacoma. It only takes a few minutes on here though to realize they aren't perfect. Better than most, but not perfect.

 

I can deal with little problems, just don't want to deal with engine failure on a low mileage vehicle! I think I want a 2015 Tacoma so I don't have to deal with potential first model year issues..

 

If I may give you a little advice try running your truck for more than 20 miles on the freeway or highway at least every two weeks. Your short drive is hurting any vehicle by not letting the oil get to operating temperatures. Enjoy your new Tacoma.
