Frame rust recall

It's a warranty. Similar to the first gen tacomas. Those frames were warranted for 15 years until they 'cancelled' it.

A recall doesn't have a time frame and doesn't just magically disappear when the manufacturer wants it to. With a recall, the vehicle can be on its 5th owner, have 300,000 miles on it and be 20 years old and you can still get a recall done for free. It's the law.....

Unlike this frame thing...whatever you call it... Warranty, Service Campaign...whatever. There's a time frame involved here.... and if people don't get their trucks inspected prior to March 2016, you are SOL.

Shitty product? Would you rather have a shitty product and Toyota NOT do anything about it?

 

i'd rather have a good product and not need anything done. they have been making shitty frames for multiple vehicles for a over a decade. you'd think they'd figure it out one day

 

The frames are shitty. How many other manufacturers have to tell customers to come in and have their frames inspected because they are falling apart, or spray them?

 

Do you really think Toyota is the only one with these issues?

They are all shitty. It is what it is. What other company had a 15+ year run of shitty frames that covered two vehicle gens? Looks like they have it addressed in the 3rd Gen though.

 

How has Toyota addressed the frame issue in the 3rd gen?

Not sure on official confirmation, but the frame was altered and "reinforced" from the 05+ versions.

 

Just because they 'redesigned' and 'reinforced' the frame doesn't mean shit...... seriously...... it's a combination of things including the steal itself, how it's made/prepped/coated and god only knows what else they do to it.

For some reason...the 'reinforced' part makes me laugh. That just makes me think they didn't do anything to prevent the rust, they just made the steal thicker so it takes more years for the rust to penetrate thru it. Sorry....that's my thought process. LOL

 

Cab is back on. Engine is in. Doing the water pump, belt, hoses, new shocks, spark plugs and stabilizer links.

 

I have not taken my truck in for the frame recall yet, as I am dealing with a NSS issue. I asked a service advisor yesterday how many frames they were replacing, he told me that they were spraying most of them. They were only replacing if they found a hole in the frame. Is that accurate? I'm wondering if I should take my truck somewhere else, I didn't see any holes (didn't look that thoroughly) but there is a lot of corrosion. Is there a specific area that I should look at where most people have found holes in the frame?

 

Oh I'm skeptical as well. Notice that I put the word "reinforced" in quotes. I'll believe it when I see it, lol. As frustrated as I am about how long of a run Toyota had with frames that rust out and failed to address the problem, it's hard not to give them the benefit of the doubt. If they truly did not address the issue with the frame on the '16 and put a band-aid on it, well that just shows you a lot about them.

 

This is the money spot. This is the inside vertical section next to the catalytic converters, at the front of the cab (both sides of the frame). This is where the majority of frame replacements have issues. This spot rusts from the inside out.

 

Are they still doing the frame inspections on the 2nd Gen's?

 

Until March 0f next year I think. Search for the TSB and or expiration date within.
